But they did subscribe to Option, Spin, and a bunch of literary magazines like Zyzzyva that made an impression on me when I was really young. Their copy of the Raw Magazine collection Read Yourself Raw burned itself into my eyeballs at a very young age. Also: biographies of Prince, Bowie, and U2.
I cherish these memories of the pre-Internet age.
Is Option the one that had flexis? Yeah, I had a few issues. I dunno if I still have the flexis. I think I had a Killing Joke one. Maybe a Cop Shoot Cop even! Argh! Not very good of a magazine, though...
Spin was my alternative source in Chilton, WI circa 1990-91!!! Byron Coley had a column called
UNDERGROUND and that honestly lead me into some strange realms. Swell Maps, Electric Eels, Pagans, Nurse With Wound, Half Japanese, etc... Kinda funny, when I moved to a slightly-larger WI burg (De Pere... a sort of suburb of Green Bay), noone in my fucking school or whatnot ever heard of any of that shit, but I was happy to buy it off the racks when I saw it ("Grey Area" re-issues on Mute got me Swell Maps real quick, took down the Electric Eels with the "God Says Fuck You" CD on Homestead, got Nurse With Wound on a trip to Milwaukee, Pagans stuff came a bit later on that Crypt CD stuff and it took me a bit longer to get around to Half-Jap...).
So, what's this all this fuss about the Sex Pistols? A gateway drug. And I still like visiting the gateway. Sex Pistols were an awesome rock'n'roll band. Better than Slaughter and the Dogs! Prolly better than the Dead Boys. The Dead Boys best songs were watered down versions of Rocket From the Tombs stuff anyway, and Pere Ubu put more balls into the songs they took. Don't fucking even try to argue that, punker!
