indietorrents
« on: October 01, 2009, 09:33:15 PM »
who else is a member of this fine website? basically the greatest site on the internet. daily routine: i usually come back to my place from going out, check indietorrents, and get stoked on all the free new jams. if you're not on this site you are living a life of shame and regret.

I understand its an invitation only club, or something like that, right? I've been offered invites, but have never gone for it. Its pretty vast though, from what I gather, and the top 10 downloads are something like a real world pitchfork rating or some such thing. I'd kind of like to read what people on there are going on about.

i would say it's gotten significantly less pitchfork in the past couple of years and more towards punk / termbo type stuff. pretty much every release mentioned on this board gets put on there plus a whole other world of shit i've never even heard of.

"'79-83 "heavy metal" curated from the old 7"s by ry wharton of skulltones label.  some serious WINDOWS DOWN shit on here.  comment tags have the original records if you're looking for them.

only 50 made, cardboard arrigato packs.  sign up for the mailing list, stuff goes fast. "

maybe i'm old fashion but i think downloading music in mass quantities is lame. it totally takes the fun out of mailordering records and stuff. i mean, sure, you do have a point when you say it helps you choose what records to buy but i think that also kind of limits you too. if you take a chance on something and end up not liking but hang onto it anyways there is a good chance that you might like it when you pull it out and listen to it again somewhere down the line. the other side to this of course is being stuck with shitty records that you don't want, but that's a risk you know you're going to take, and it happens to everyone i'm sure. also, when you download records and then order them there's no anticipation man, there's no excitement when you go out to check the mail everyday to see if the mailman has come yet. am i the only person that feels this way? there are probably a lot of people that disagree with me and think that downloading music is essential or something, but that's just my take on it. to me it totally seems to make punk music more...boring, or typical or...stale. i don't know how to say it, it just seems like it's totally contrary to the idea of underground music...

i'm not criticizing or anything i'm just saying it's not really my thing, but i think it's interesting how downloading music has pretty much become a part of every day life for a lot of people. what do you older people think about this? do you miss the good old days of trading tapes or going over to your friends house to tape records, or do you prefer the convenience of modern times?

I just mean "real world pitchfork" in the sense that, the site has a pretty huge member list, and if people are downloading an album over there, it means a lot of people are hearing that album. I actually think of it as pretty good promotion for indie labels.

I guess I figure there are probably a lot of Pavement, Dinosaur, or Guided By Voices fans over there, too. Which I'm not saying is a bad thing, really, I'm just making a silly blanket generalization.

I'm also someone that buys a lot of records having never heard them, and as silly as it really is in 2009, I enjoy putting an LP on for the first time and having that whole experience. I definitely don't enjoy listening to rotten sounding records, but I guess the bad ones make the good ones sound so much better. Like buying those fucking Venus and the Razorblades records, and getting another record that doesn't completely suck at the same time.

also, when you download records and then order them there's no anticipation man, there's no excitement when you go out to check the mail everyday to see if the mailman has come yet. am i the only person that feels this way? there are probably a lot of people that disagree with me and think that downloading music is essential or something, but that's just my take on it. to me it totally seems to make punk music more...boring, or typical or...stale. i don't know how to say it, it just seems like it's totally contrary to the idea of underground music...

i guess i am just really impatient. ie. that new pissed jeans record was on its way to me in the mail, but then it hit the internet & i downloaded it. i still buy records before they are ripped on bands that i'm really into & if they are super ltd presses. but if it leaks before i receive them i ruin the surprise. i can't help it! but i still love getting it in the mail and splooging all over the artwork/packaging. it may also be i just hate waiting for the mail & that there really aren't any good records stores around me.

yo mtv2 do you have a spare invite or anything, i can give you a waffles one in trade yo

i used to have like 45 spare invites, but i got a warning by an admin and had them all removed.

I actually think of it as pretty good promotion for indie labels.

i think it's a really great promotion aspect. it makes me buy more records.

no, i've never really noticed anything & i've been on there for over four years. as long as you keep a fairly good ratio of uploaded to downloaded. i just mouthed off too hard one time. i knew i was wrong as soon as i posted it but i don't think there's a delete/edit. really though, it's fine. everyone is cool there.

there's no excitement when you go out to check the mail everyday to see if the mailman has come yet.

I rarely mailorder records this day, but the anticipation of waiting for a record and then actually hearing it is one of the best parts of being a music/record fan. It makes you at least try to appreciate a record in some basis as opposed to getting an immediate reaction.

I agree with the previous points that the crazy access to almost every good record way ahead of time that #it provides does sort of spoil the physical aspect of buying and listening to records, but on the other hand, that site has revitalized my passion for music and records so many times and turned me on to so many awesome bands and records that I might not have ever found no matter how many zines or blogs I read or shows I attended.  Indietorrents has definitely increased the amount of records I buy.

Another reason I appreciate indietorrents is that even if I buy a record, I don't really have the best set up for ripping vinyl, so it's nice to have regular access to high quality rips in one place.
