I kinda like that song on the video. It's pretty good. Not really any more embarrassing than the Strokes who I went pretty apeshit for when they broke out.

After watching that rooftop performance from Girls, I actually fell for them pretty hard. Their stuff has some serious darkness to it, and yet it comes off with all this near-tropical sheen that it's hard not to smile. Really love "Substance," which unfortunately isn't on their first album, "album".

Also, I think they need to hire a new band member solely as an overseer of nomenclature. The stupid name and album title have caused me to revoke their naming privileges, they'll be getting a letter in the mail about it soon.

Here's a true story:

Today at work, a box arrived on which somebody had made an illustration.  This illustration was of a "smiley face"  looking roughly like this -> :)

I work at a warehouse.  There are a lot of boxes there.  Many of them have smiley faces drawn on them.  It is physical, dull labor.  It is work.  A smiley face on a box does nothing to brighten my day.  They are a dime a dozen.  They don't mean anything.

Occasionally, at work, a box will arrive with a more uncommon illustration.  Perhaps a bird with a giant tongue flying frantically over the company logo whilst taking a shit on it.  Or perhaps a few words put together on box top, be it vague non-sequitors or mere fuck you's.  Sometimes, I will even see illustrations or words that I myself placed on a box many years before! Seeing these things are much more interesting and, yes, more fun than seeing another fucking smiley face.  They could even make me... smile!

This can be applied to music -- this Girls band of which this thread is named is merely another smiley face on another fucking box.  There's so many of them out there.  And they don't mean a thing.  And even though the intention is plainly there, they don't make me smile.

That song in particular is pretty damn catchy, but the band is a sad mediocrity and their "scene" is repugnant.  On principle: no, thanks.

Could someone please explain what their "scene" is and what the NYC equivalent is?  Thanks!

Was so bummed to find out this is their only song that sounds like this. This is my favorite song right now, and I think the video is awesome too! Wish I could make music like this. I'd be able to afford some drugs right now then I'm sure.

Lust for Life is awful. So bad it makes me embarrassed. Doesnt help it brings me back to the mid 90s and swedish indie pop darlings Brainpool that I loathe

I think you're drawing a connection there because the vocals, but I think you're way off with it. The vocals on that Swedish shit are really snotty in a Green Day kinda way  while the vocals on that Girls thing are sexy in a wanna be glam singer fucked up on dope kinda way. Two very different animals.

Anyway, I can understand some people's complaints here, but to just say the song is bad? That's kinda bullshit. It's really not that far off from stuff people here like, like Thomas Function, or Strokes, but I feel like it's got more of an "old" or classic feel than that stuff. The production on the song is pretty amazing. That weird pump organ sounding solo in the middle is pretty great too.

Honestly, this song has been playing in my head non stop for a couple of days now. It's so fucking catchy. I'm seriously disappointed the rest of their stuff sounds like what it does, otherwise I'd be happy to join in on the hype with whoever else is hypin' this shit.

The song also kinda reminds me of that Walkmen song The Rat, doubly so in that it's the only song really like it by the band, although at least the Walkmen had a few other decent/ok-ish songs while this is the really the only thing I've heard by Girls that's even remotely worthwhile.
