How long are you gonna be here?

Don't eat out much but L'as du falafel (34, Rue Rosiers in the 4th arrondissement) is a good place; also some good indian food on the east side Gare du Nord.

Records stores to visit would be Born Bad, Bimbo Tower, Vinyl Office, and maybe Monster Melodies (not friendly and very expensive but you find stuff). Just google those names for more info. There's also a great store in the Puces de Clignancourt (northern flea market), can't remember the name but it's across the street from a bar called Le Picolo (58 Rue Jules Vall?s in Saint Ouen, 10 minutes walk from the subway Porte de Clignancourt)

Don't expect great weather but it ain't so bad if you have an umbrella.

fantastic place! pita bread is insanely good. best falafel place i've ever been to, and i've been to hundreds.

and if you are hitting just one museum, go to the Pompidou. It is where the most modern art is at and great great stuff. Plan for 3 hours, at least, which is a lot less time than you need for the Louvre. The Pompidou is also in the 4th.

The other thing you can do is wander around the 6th, just off the Pont Neuf, between Rue Guenegaud and Rue Dauphine. There are tons of small art galleries down there that have insane stuff hanging. One afternoon I was killing time while the girlfriend was getting her hair done and stumbled into a bunch little galleries and saw Koons, Basquiat, and Damien Hirst stuff hanging/displayed for sale, like you would see in any art gallery. Just walked on in and was 6 inches from this stuff. It wasnt like a whole show's worth of art, a few pieces here and there, but how often do you see work from artists like that outside of museums? And if you don't see any stuff while you are wandering, exploring Paris is never a waste of time.

One big word of advise for anyone going to Paris: Do not try to take in everything. Maybe put one or two tourist things on your list, but otherwise clear your days for exploring. Rather than waste an afternoon waiting in line to go up the Eiffel Tower, hike up the Sacre Coeur. You'll get a great view and be in a better area to explore than you will with the Eiffel Tower. And you dont have to wait in lines to climb the hill. If it is a nice night grab some beer or wine and go to the river and drink with the students. And as corny as it sounds, take a river boat down the Seine at night. It isnt too much and an hour off your feet while looking at the buildings and Eiffel Tower lit up, from the water, is a good way to relax and see shit. Again, don't rush things. Paris will always be there and you can always return.

While you're eating falafel in the Marais, I'd just wander around the neighborhood for small art galleries.  I also recommend the Rodin sculpture museum and the Musee d'Orsay.

If you're looking for an authentic bistro experience that isn't too expensive, I'd say go to L'avant Gout in the 13th.  The supermarket Le Grand Epicerie (7th) is also a cool place to pick up some snacks.

Bon voyage.

I LOVE L'as du Falafel. (metro: St. Paul)  Best one I've ever had.  I make a special trip there every time I'm in Paris,  which has been WAY too long.  I agree with Soriano's advice.  I've also enjoyed less popular tourist sights like going to Ste. Chappelle instead of Notre Dame. I agree with the Musee Rodin, it's probably one of my favorite museums in Europe.  Pompidou is great, and if you want to see only french modern works check out the Musee d'art moderne de la ville de Paris.  You're likely to see works by artists you wouldn't see in the U.S.  I'm quite jealous!

Thank you!!I'm going to be there for a week.definatley going to the Pompidou. Their site shows 2 Current painting shows that both look really great. Do the flea market/open air markets go year round? I'm wanting to find the Rhubarb 45 for 1 euro or something.! Will make a note of those record stores as well. Was gonna go to Versailles, the Rodin museum, I want to find a place with really good oysters. Again, thanks a ton for the recommendations. I'ts gonna be really fun, even if the weather is bad.

Its looks like it is open year round.  When you first get there it looks like the flea market is all knock-off shoes and other crap.  But when you wade past that you'll find all record stands, vintage clothes, and cool antiques.  I remember seeing really rad bakelite purses.

There's two main flea markets. There is Les Puches, metro Cligancourt, which is a combo of small stores, junk shops, antique shops and stalls. There are regular record dealers there and it is tough to find great deals on records.  I prefer the one at Porte de Vanves/Avenue Georges-Lafenestr which has plenty of people selling off their stuff. That is where you are most likely to come across of box of ye ye or garage 45s. It is totally open air.  Any flea market is gonna be combed by record dealers and diggers who will strip the places of valuable and rare records, but they ignore a lot of 60s stuff because it is common over there. I've had great finds in Paris but they have all been when I had access to record store basements and backrooms, and I had to have an introduction or work to get into those places. And even then, record dealers in Paris are pretty fucking savvy. They tend to know what they have.  One thing though, ask around and see if there is gonna be a record fair when you are there. There seems to be one a month or every other month. I've been to two small ones and they were great. Like all record fairs, you hit the jazz dealers 1 euro box and find good rock stuff and you hit it at the end of the day and haggle. A lot of the dealers are from the outskirts of Paris and will bargain. Helps to know a little french - numbers and "do you speak english", "excuse me", "hello" and "thank you".

Vanves is a better Puces than Clignancourt, but you may want to check that record store in Clignancourt, not cheap but the guy has often unusual stuff. Like the Puces it's only open on saturday, sunday and monday.
