Reatard was crazy.

in a good way, or in a bad way?!

From what I heard, a very bad way.

The homicide squad doesn't get involved in the case of an overdose.

until a toxicology report comes back they don't know it's an overdose.  until then it's a suspicious death and the s.o.p. is to investigate suspicious deaths as homicides until another cause can be determined.

i went to see sudden here a night or two before he died in nyc.    super nice guy...didnt seem overly fucked up.

I've met Nikki Sudden too a few years before he died and he didn't seem fucked up at all and was very nice. He was also very friendly to my brother who doesn't speak English.

I've seen so many of my friends lose their lives to drugs one way or another in the last 20 years. You're either able to quit or you just don't and no one can help. I was one of the lucky ones to have been able to kick it completely. I still see so many people around me doing drugs casually and I do hope that they know they're increasing the chances of an accidental death by doing hard drugs. I have absolutely nothing against them. I just don't wanna see any more people die from it. It's such a waste.

I learned to speak English by watching Three's Company

As both a fan of his music and a friend of the guy, I am deeply sorry to everyone who knew him in both respects at this terrible news. I spent a lot of time with him over his Australian tours, and the last few times I spoke with him he was really excited about getting back here again, saying that Australia was one of the only places in the world he felt comfortable kicking back and staying away from coke and booze. The last time he was here he didn't touch a drop the whole time, just popping painkillers because his back was fucked (he was in chronic pain) and one memorable night on acid listening to Antidote. We spoke recently because on the UV Race US tour he was going to play a circuit of shows with us and record a 7" for Shattered, and he was really self deprecating, speaking about how he was drinking heavily again, and that was bad news for me because I saw how excited he was in Australia to be dry. My thoughts are with his friends and family especially at this point. R.I.P.

jay was always nice to me, even when i was snarky to him cuz i'd think of him (and still do) as a snotty 19-year-old. i only ever witnessed his volatile side on stage. i'm really sorry to hear he's gone, and my heart goes out to everyone who loved him.

i'll be doing a tribute to him on my radio show tomorrow, FRI 1/15: kalx.berkeley.edu. my show's from noon-3pm, the tribute will be from 2-3pm California time.

I gotta say, Jay's death has affected me in a more profound way than I ever thought possible.  More so than ANY musician dying in my lifetime.  The reality of it REALLY set in last night.  I haven't been that bummed out in a really long time.

I had the pleasure of seeing bands he performed in on AT LEAST a dozen occasions, either in Lost Sounds, Reatards (reunion show w/ Teengenerate in 2005), Angry Angles or his solo band, and he brought it every single time.  I also had the pleasure of working with him on shows in Montreal about a half dozen times.  I honestly wish I would have talked to him more on those occasions, but I think I was more in awe of his presence than anything else.

Most memorable show(s):  Definitely (without a doubt) the two sets Lost Sounds played in Buffalo NY on the same night in April 2002 (one of which was live on the radio at a college radio station).  Thanks to Richie for putting those shows on.

Doh!

Seriously, though, assholes, who isn't gonna miss Jay's tragically underspelled feuds on here with Vinnie, Russ, BradX, etc? That's some classic Termbo right there.

best TB feud ever: Jay vs. G Lo!!!!!!!!!

CLASSIC!!!!

when i talked to the cops that morning they said there was no sign of foul play....i think fox is exaggerating.  they just aired a long story about his death on fox news and never even mentioned it.

it looked to me like it was a stock piece of copy they probably used whenever the cops announce a murder investigation "blah blah blah call this number with any information, memphis police are actively pursuing suspects."  it's not like they can say "the memphis police announced a murder investigation but they aren't actually looking for shit."

That was a sick day. I think the Blowtops get credit for setting that one up, me and Manchovies got the radio thing done. Plus, you drove all the way from MTL to Buffalo for that! They were great, that radio performance was so good. We (me & Manchovies) almost released that on CD/LP, but we were too stupid to actually pull it off. I almost had it mastered and everything. After we gave up, every time Jay would see me he would ask "Hey, hows that live LP coming?" sarcastically. That night I got really hammered and Jay & Alicja were good sports and answered 2000 questions from me about Memphis/Oblivians/Jeff Evans/etc....

Richie, you should release that! I would think that there will be a lot of Jay related bootlegs to come out soon. There is a great Blood Visions tour era live set floating around that is amazing.
