Brooklyn motel best location help please
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:12:00 AM »
I'm trying to pick between booking a motel on 22nd street near the Prospect Ave stop and a B&B that's on Ocean Ave near the Prospect Park stop.  I'm assuming that neither of these are ideal in terms of location but they're the best choices for me and my girlfriend on our budget.  Just wondering which is going to be easier to get back to at night on public transportation from wherever the good bars and venues are.  Gonna be there for 4 nights on the last weekend in June.

The choice is between the R Train and the Q train? I'd take the Q every time, mostly 'cause I love the Q Train. I think the Q is one of the more attractive trains in the city in terms of commute, as it goes over the Bridge into Manhattan and you can see the downtown skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty in one shot, with a sunset tossed in during the early evening. 4th ave near Prospect Ave isn't exactly scenic, but I can't think of what its like over on Ocean right now either, probably better.

On the Q you can ride out to Coney quickly too, or Brighton Beach, or Midwood.

The Q! I'm a big fan of the Q. Runs express at most times. You might also look at the Holiday Inn Express on Union  St om Brooklyn, I've heard it's ok. It's pretty close to where your looking though.

There's also a new Super 8 right around the corner from the Holiday Inn. I know nothing about it other than it's across the street from my apartment.

Thanks for the replies.  I was about to go with the B&B on Ocean Ave when I found a cheaper B&B that wasn't on the hotel search engines.  Around $90 (inc tax) a night and looks pretty nice.  Its near the Chauncey Street (J,Z) stop, I'm assuming that's not too bad an area as the person who runs the place is a lawyer and its a brownstone.

I think that's bed-stuy. It's not that great of a neighborhood.  Other ny-ers may know that area better than and could say otherwise. I'm uneasy anytime I'm on broadway.. but that's me.

Have you tried http://www.airbnb.com/?  It's vacation rentals, you might be able to find something else there.

Broadway ain't bed-stuy, but yeah, bed-stuy freaks me out during the daytime sometimes when I go there for work, of course anytime I actually talk to people on the street they're always really super nice. Still, going there makes me wish I had a gun. It might be that I'm just a racist though.

yeah i always think of that part of broadway as the outer border of bed-stuy. since it kinda draws the line between bed-stuy and bushwick.

Kinda funny imagining someone new to town choosing Bed-Stuy as their place for a vacation.

Balls so I chose somewhere on the frontline of the gentrification race war?  Oh well, not planning on spending a lot of time there, just wanted somewhere in Brooklyn so I wouldn't be too far from bars and stuff.  Every time I've been in NYC before I've been staying in the suburbs or there on a Monday or something so I've never been to any shows other than ABC NO RIO Matinees circa 2002.

Some place to keep your eye on also would be Craigslist "temporary/sublet" section.  The other day I saw a really awesome furnished loft apartment that you would have all to yourself that was available for $90/night between certain dates.  It was like at Bedford and N.5th or something, way closer to millions of bars than anything in Bed-stuy or Bushwick would be.

Just saw that this would be in the last weekend in June.  Really doubtful anything would be up on Craigslist for that far in advance but really the apartment sublet thing is a great idea.  Kevin and I went to visit some friends from Australia who stayed at this really really beautiful furnished apartment in Williamsburg that they found through some company that specializes in apartment swaps.  Pretty sure you can find stuff pretty inexpensively that way.

Bed-Stuy looks creepier than a lot of places in western Brooklyn. As I mentioned, everyone I've talked to on the street there have been way helpful and nice, but it doesn't change the fact that it looks creepy as fuck. Also, anywhere there is large groups of young black males there is danger, whether that's politically correct to say or not.
