Hotel Recommendations in New York
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:23:57 PM »
I might be meeting my girlfriend for a few days in NYC this coming March if everything comes together, and was wondering if anyone has any hotel recommendations. She wants to stay in a relatively nicer, older hotel with "atmosphere" as opposed to a Holiday Inn or what have you. She's thinking like a grand for five nights/six nights or somewhere around there. Any one have any recommendations?

I looked up some reviews of the Chelsea, and I don't think it's quite what she's got in mind.

the rooms are not especially sexy, but the hotel itself is nice and among the best locations

The W Hotel at Union Square maybe?
My company did work in the Lobby there years ago. Ex girls mother used to stay there all the time when in town.

The Ace Hotel on 29th street has one of the best Hotel Lobby / Bar / Restaurant combos around. A really great space, I think. The rooms might be a bummer though.

It's double Steve's budget, running approx $400/night.

Check out vacation rentals on craigslist or elsewhere.  Can generally find a nice fully equipped apartment for less than the cost of a hotel.

This is the usual pick at that price point. It's also adjacent to Freemans.

Kayak.com is having a sale on rooms at the Ace Hotel for members.  $99/night.  I stayed at the one in Portland a couple years ago and it was swanky in a Spartan kind of way.

Yeah it's in the same ballpark as Soho Grand/Tribeca Grand/60 Thompson/THOR/etc.

They've all gone down a bit from 2008/2007 - but they're still not at that price point.

You wanted a relatively nice, older place with atmosphere that you could afford, right? This is the place.

I stayed there once, the rooms are much bigger than any other hotel I've seen in NY, and it's the only hotel I've seen in NY with "atmosphere."
