Fake Punk
« on: February 28, 2010, 11:01:59 PM »
...aka Studio Punk, Punksploitation, Cash-In, etc.  You know the kind.  From Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias, to "Food Fight", to ...The Fabulous Stains, this is something that I'm very interested in but can't seem to find much ink spilled on the subject.  List some more examples, or even post articles on the subject.

Probably the hallmark of the genre:

I think that's probably up for debate, as I'm sure opinions vary as to whether Gen X even counts as authentic or not.  Same goes for Adam Ant, I 'spose.

Let's distinguish that as "mall punk" or "jock punk" for the purpose of this thread.

i wouldn't call that stuff fake punk...more just in a league of it's own. warped tour punk maybe. on second thought, most of that shit is pretty fake...mass marketed for the rebelious teenager to gobble up and piss off their parents. i just feel inclined to stand up for nofx because at one point they were real punks i think, i mean, they were a band back in the 80s and stuff and they did put out a record on mystic, a reputable 80's punk label. everything up to pump up the valuum is solid in my opinion, by i have a weak spot for that band because they are one of the first "punk" bands i ever heard. punk in drublic was the first actual punk cd i ever owned i think.

Sorry, no, it's not a dumb question at all, just overlooked.  Let's file it alongside Billy Idol for now.

Yes!  Anything specifically generated for a TV show or movie is exactly what I'm looking for here.

Wasn't there a Pink Panther punk record, or am I imagining things?  I know there's that Chipmunk Punk album with covers of Cheap Trick and the Knack, etc.
