NYC - where to buy a fuse for old stereo equipment?
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:28:08 AM »
Maybe at a decent guitar shop?

I walked in a Radio Shack for the first time in years.  It ain't the store of my childhood.  Where's all the cool stuff?  Fuck cell phones.

I picked up an awesome old Teac top-load tape deck with dual VU meters today, and I think a fuse will make it work.

Did you try J & R? They just seem to stock everything. Love that place. Indian dude who works in the turntable section has sold me my last 3 record players.

I was going to check there on Monday.  I pass by it on my commute.

Hey Justin I know the Radio Shack on 23rd & 7th still has all the gizmos and gadgets and dooodads in the back room....switches, transistors, pots, etc...

Is it just a standard size fuse you are after or a tube?

You didn't buy that at the estate sale in the neighborhood, did you?

I managed to find the fuse I needed at the Radio Shack on 440.

Nope, although funny you ask since I did buy other vintage audio stuff there.  Nothing great, but things that were cheap enough for me to flip.

Good to know.  The one on Bergen Ave sucks.

Got it there, thanks.  Now it powers up and the VU meters light up nicely, but won't play/ff/rew.  Next step: remove the bottom panel and probably find the belts are all broken, which is typical for a 35 year old cassette deck.  Then decide if I wanna spend ~$25 on a set in hopes everything else is fine.

In addition to your DVD player I now also have a Technics belt drive turntable (sans belt) up for grabs as well.

All serious offers will be considered.

Opened up the bottom and found a loose belt which I put back where it belonged.  Listening to Misfits "Walk Among Us" original cassette on Ruby Records now.  Awesome.

Total investment: $8.26, although I'll probably replace the belts later anyway.
