NYC: Shopping For Hot Sauce, Spices and Tequila
« on: April 03, 2010, 12:39:12 AM »
Can anyone please recommend a place that carries a wide selection of gourmet hot sauces, preferably in Manhattan?  How about Mexican- and other spices?

Also, what's the best place to buy bottles of liquor (as in, a shop)?  Specifically, I'm looking for premium tequila and/or mescal.

Thanks,

Derek

Kalustyans (123 Lexington Ave) should do the trick...grocery store of spices with a decent hot sauce aisle.

Astor Wines at Lafayette and 4th St probably has a great selection.  Warehouse Wines, a few blocks away at Broadway and Astor, is more hit-and-miss, but worth a look.

Went there once for some Aji peppers to make a more authentic lomo saltado with.  You can also check their website to make sure they have what you're looking for: http://www.kalustyans.com/

Pick up some Calypso Sauce, I've been really into this lately.  Matouk's makes a good one.  Also really like this hot sauce called cackalacky that some guy in NC makes.

Warehouse will have some premium tequilas but is usually out of Mezcal. Astor has a reasonable selection (Del Maguey and the like.). There are a few other shops with more extensive selections but much higher prices.

Thanks for the tips!
