so I just listened to that whole record and I have to say it's pretty sucky compared to their last one, BUT
that song that you're gaga over, wnks, has to be the fucking WORST out of all of them (the only one that comes close is the instro but at least you're saved the inane ravings of a sweaterbrain in that one)

will never take a recommendation from you again

Next time I see you I hope you have that Junkie XL with you. Most of their output is like the music from those anti-piracy commercials at the start of dvd movies. I've got some pants from junior high we could rock.

Comments: MGMT rhymes with Polyphonic Spree. It?s true. ?It?s Working? makes me mistake the two psychedelic pop bands. MGMT made this record filled to the brim with pretty basic weird music. It?s pretty listenable, but repetitive and unnecessarily exploratory. Unlike some people, I don?t necessarily hate ?Flash Delirium.? It?s a bit too much to really handle, but at the same it?s relatively average. ?I Found A Whistle? is one of those tracks where I imagine a bunch of people holding whistles and each other?s hands in a large auditorium. The band successfully rips off the likes of the late Jay Reatard with ?Brian Eno? for nearly two minutes before a small jazz break and psychedelic mash-up sets in. So for a dude like me ?Brian Eno? represents the very best of this album and is right up there with all those Oracular  songs that people hold near and dear. ?Congratulation? is a neat softie rock song. It won?t get you dancing or really doing anything, but it?s chill. I?d be pretty shocked if anyone really falls in love with this album.

tl;dr version
: It's sort of bad except for "Brian Eno" --- sounds like Jay!!!

and they're always name-dropping Suicide and Royal Trux in interviews

Since when does name dropping cool bands mean you're in one?

You ever hear a' this band SONIC YOUTH?

But seriously, in neither of my original posts did I mention anything about them being "COOL" maaaan.  All I'm saying is that compared to other bands of their stature I think they at least deserve a little bit more credit than your Vampire Weekends or your Yeasayers.  I mean for all I know Helios Creed now has a couple new fans that would never have found out about the dude otherwise.  Maybe Jennifer Herima and Sonic Boom got nice paychecks from working on this record.  What have Dr. Dog done for anyone lately, y'know?  And as far as their sonics are concerned, it's relatively innofensive and at times kinda catchy.  I don't give a flying rat fart if these dudes started out small, released their own 7", partied with John Dwyer and snorted Reatard's ashes... I like Justin Timberlake and Madonna fer chrissakes!

confessional time: the new record is really pretty good. the production is sweet. i feel dirty now.

arrrrg, there is no problem liking music that is not "punk" or not "cool".   Sometimes I feel like we're high school punks getting mad at our favorite bands for "selling out" or whatever.  Getting over that phase was the best thing that ever happened to me musically.  Sure, obscure punk shit rules, but that doesn't make liking an awesome song "dirty".  STUFF THAT SOUNDS GOOD IS GOOD.  I love The Nerves but I also love that one song by Girls and I think "Remix To Igniton" by R Kelly was the best song of the last decade.   TASTE IS TASTE.

ignition by r kelly is fucking great
