I love Real Estate---far from overhyped.

Overhyped: Japandroids, Wounded Lion, Girls, The XX, Dirty Projectors.

don't know anything about the other bands with the exception of real estate, but you're totally wrong wrong
wrong about wounded lion. Great lp, great singles, and even greater live show. Soundwise, it's nothing extraordinary groundbreaking, but neither is real estate...which, honestly sounds like a half-ass pavement.

If I were to say anything, I'd say that wounded lion is under rated.

fine, you don't have to limit yourselves to 2009, you can include the first half of 2010 as well... I usually find anything that ends up on the top ten lists of most indie record stores and sites like pitchfork to be over-hyped and overrated, usually because a lot of people are lazy and don't really listen to records, they just listen to what was already on someone else's list...

- Wavves
- Real Estate
- Girls
-Vampire Weekend (bleeeeaaaaauuurghhhh)
- Animal Collective
- Grizzly Bear
- The XX
- The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

and any bands with Deer and/or  Crystal in their names....

Seriously, who cares. None of those bands matter! Why talk about things that are null and void?

Overhyped: Japandroids, Wounded Lion, Girls, The XX, Dirty Projectors.

Would've agreed about Wounded Lion till last week. Hungry?, Degobah System & their cover of Pony People are all mixtape worthy. 3 songs from one album is better than most bands. Tho Cr?nchy Stars is a bad Arcade Fire parody.

Girls get my vote.

What do you mean by "cover" of Pony People??? That is their song....

Anyways, they are great.

Neat!

i agree with all this except the xx. probably gonna get banned for this, but i think they're miles ahead of most other blog-hyped bands in consistency and song writing. i love that song in the middle of the record that sounds a bit like bark psychosis. obviously they also rip off young marble giants to the max but i'm okay with that. probably sucks live though.

Damn

Vivians get dropped all the time for being a prime example of overhype but seriously i never read an article that said more than "The Vivian Girls are a rock and roll band and they are ok/good/i (or we) love 'em." that's sweet but i don't think that's hype. somehow (dunno why) people like to read about them, ok, that seems to be it. are they even selling that much records?

XX. just remember that all the indie victims here in germany (some friends among them) were really happy about their album so i kept a distance. saw two of em (are they more?) performing a song on acoustic guitars which was like eating crispbread. just crispbread. nothing on it. so i thought "they better have some fancy analog synths" but didn't bother to find out.

Girls is a domesticated freak show it seems. authenticism card and all. not really overhype.

i don't think this indie stuff qualifies at all. it's just solipsistic underground idiots hating this stuff and calling it The Hype. i go with lady gaga. there just isn't that much overhyped stuff. we need more i think.

hype-wise blogs don't count for me so i'm probably missing the point somebody tries to make here. i mean a pathetic blog employing this hype style of writing is for fucking losers and totally worthless.

this all came up because in my few interactions with indep. record stores, distributors and online order (shit sites like Insound for example)... they all seem to always be pushing the same bands as the "big new thing"... and they all use the same descriptions provided by the label...

It makes me wonder how much of certain bands popularity via the internet is fabricated (by labels/distributors/promoters) and not always necessarily based on these bands really having a fan base to begin with... A lot of bands seem to pop out of the blue and sell like crazy and then are all but forgotten within less than a year/or a few months later... I know, this is a waste of my time, and who cares... but I was pretty surprised to hear that a lot bands that are supposed to be "independent" use publicists... call me naive or bitter or whatever you like... but I find that to be pretty lame and I personally tend to respect bands who build up a solid listening base on their won and remain independent (no booking agents, no publicists, no bullshit) .

Sure, most folks on TERMBO don't give a fuck/shit about some of these bands/scene and it should be a given that they all "suck" but... isn't it bizarre that even now that major chain stores are gone and the big labels complain over and over about how the internet is destroying music a lot of indep labels have just replaced the big labels with the same practices? aggressive promotion, sponsorship deals, pressuring radio DJs and music writers to promote and play their shit, etc...

whatever, fuck it

I figured since it came out the Intelligence's Fake Surfers last year, that it was the Intelligence's song.

when a band is described as "overhyped" i think it just means they got more hype than they deserve.  overhyped bands dont have to be mainstream on pop radio.  any bands that get more coverage and popularity than they deserve, while being significantly worse than other lesser known bands in that scene/genre, should get the "overhyped" tag.  for example, vivian girls are overhyped because they are blogged about, when their output screams that they should just be ignored by everyone.

this is all bullshit anyway.

then those bands that deserve it should start makin music that appears listenable to more than 500 people.
