Madison

This coming weekend.. is anything of note happening?

(MKE folks.. sounds like my time in your town will be limited to a quick trip to the airport.  Maybe next time!)

Mebbe someone else knows better than I, but I'll try to do a little digging and will post here if anything's "poppin'".

That said, it's the interim summer months, so lack of students leads to a smaller draw for touring bands, not that a lot come through anyways. If the weather is nice I would recommend drinking outside, that is my general plan for summer weekends.

I prefer madison in the 'non student' season. Mebbe we'll just hit the thrift and record stores around town.

And I will be consuming TONS of these:

And what's a trip to Madison without a trip to the TAXIDERMY MUSEUM!

And some ruebins from Ella's Deli

Awright, not sure what you're into, but from a quick look here's the closest to "Termbo friendly" happenings this weekend. Might also be some deep-underground style basement stuff; I never know about that...

FRIDAY:
The Midwest Beat LP release show @ the Frequency, 10pm (come late to miss the Blueheels)
db pederson performing @ Mickey's, 10:30pm (other stuff too, but he's what I'd be there for.
DJ Kool Herc (!) and Clyde Stubblefield opening for something dubiously named "AfroFlow", fulfilling the outdoor drinking requirement @ the Memorial Union Terrace, 9:30pm

SATURDAY:
Knuckel Drager @ the Wisco, 10pm... not my thing, but should be "punky" here.
db pederson again, w/ some free jazz and experimental yobs this time 'round @ Mother Fool's 8:00pm
Northern Lights - Northern soul DJs (Aaron from Peaking Lights is one, but I think he's outta town for this gig...) @ Alchemy, 10pm

Hope that helps!

Ooh. I am a fan of drinking at the memorial terrace.  We'll be staying in Monona (but right by Monona Drive, so close enough to bus lines).  Doing a lot of family stuff, but might have a chance to come out and party.

... and yr absolutely right on that Madison is much more enjoyable when the students are off mowing lawns (though I used to be one [a student, not a lawn]). I'm sure you'll find plenty of curds, though I wish you godspeed in doing so without stumbling across a BLUES JAM.

Awesome. If the weather is nice I think I'll try to make it down to the Terrace to catch the godfather of hip-hop work the crossfader with his arthritic fingers on Friday. I haven't been there yet this year... a word of advice that last time I was there they were being a bit more hardcore on checking for Union memberships, so make sure yr prepped for that before spending the time in line to get a pitcher.

Also, if yr in Monona you're not too far away from where the Northern Lights thing will be going down on Saturday. If yr familiar w/ the area at all, it's just down the street from Monty's Blue Plate.

Yep. I know where Mickey's is (grew up in Madison/Monona)

Gotcha. I'm fairly thick and failed to put that together from your stating that you'd be in Monona for "family stuff"... sorry. Just to clarify re: Saturday, the Northern Lights DJ set is at the Alchemy (right next to the Ideal Bar @ Atwood x Winnebago), not Mickeys (but very close). In case you were to show up, I don't want to be blamed for recommending whatever is going on Saturday at Mickeys (looks to be singer-songerwriter crap and one of the dudes from the Gomers).

The taxidermy museum is in Middleton, right? Or am I thinking of the mustard museum?

Really? I swear I've talked about this place in the past. It's on the west side of town (almost at Middleton) in the basement of Cress Funeral Home.  Sam Sanfillippo was an old drinking buddy of my dad's (and from the pics, he was drinking buddies with plenty of local govt officials as well).  I went to a funeral there when I was 11, and that's the first time I saw the taxidermy museum.

Call first to find out if you can stop by. And when you get there and they ask, "do you want me to turn it on?" always say YES.  (There are some animated things like a muskee chasing a lure, and squirrels on a ferris wheel)

Dead Pals of Sam Sanfillippo
Address: 6021 University Ave., Madison, WI
Directions:Cress Funeral Home
Hours:By appt. when no funeral is scheduled. (Call to verify)
Phone:608-238-8406
I'm glad to know that this place wants the collection when/if Sam passes away

I try to be quiet and respectful when I'm there.. (because I want to be able to come back).

It is AMAZING.  My great aunt was highly amused when we went there last year.

I love Monty's Blue Plate.  Bummed that the black bean burger is no longer on the menu. BOO!

aw shit. It's hotter than fuck. Where does a girl go to get some decent (read: STRONG) coffee around here?

No Peet's coffee. I guess I'm stuck with the sugarbomb called starbucks.

Yeah, it's fuggin' sweltering. Well, I'm in A/C right now but will be back in the muck shortly.

Probably already took care of yr caffeine needs, but FYI for other days here, if it's still super hot out I would recommend the iced coffee at In the Company of Thieves @ 908 E Johnson if you can make it there.

Otherwise, there'a a few options I would think are much better than Starbucks... Ancora? If you mean strong, like strong and BLACK, then I'm not as sure of the breakdown, 'cuz I usually just French press my own. Bradbury's (just down the hill from where Cafe Montemarte used to be on the outer loop) has good french pressed coffee, but you'll likely have to submit to some fairly tepid indie rock.

If yr drinking sugar-things, the White Zombie at Ancora is good, the Spanish latte at Zoma on Atwood is a personal fave, and I've heard that Cafe Soleil on the capitol square (under L'Etoile) has something mind-blowing simply called "magic coffee", but I have not yet partaken.

This has been a slow week at work.
