Sit or Squat - uses GPS to locate the cleanest restroom in your vicinity.

Right when you get your iphone, you'll probably end up downloading a shitload of apps and deleting most of them later. The ones I still regularly use:

New York Times - Obvious, but this is probably the thing I look at most on the bus.
Shazam - You're at the mall. You need to know what you're listening to at the shoe store.
White Noise - If you need noise to sleep, this is essential
Weather Channel - Works way better than the built-in weater app.
ebay
Urbanspoon (for finding restaurants in the area, not sure how many cities it works in)
Drinks (mixed drink recipes, useful if you only have random shit in the cabinet)
Flixter (best app for looking up movie times with a summary of reviews - very helpful if you just saw a movie and are contemplating sneaking into a second one)
IMDB (internet movie database - apparently there's a deluxe one but I dunno what it does)
What's On (best app for looking up tv times & seeing when Law & Order is on next - can be used with whatever cable/antenna you have)
Guitar Tuner
Routesy bus times
Sportaculuar sports scores, schedules, etc.
Myphone lets you link all your phone contacts with fbook so you automatically have photos come up when people call you, if you're into that sort of thing
This American Life (new app is really amazing, has every episode, and now you can save them if you're heading into spotty reception)
Simplify - I don't actually use this one much, but I still think it's pretty great to be able to access your home itunes from your work or phone.
Pandora - I don't really need this either but it can be pretty handy if you're driving and get sick of whatever you've got.
WunderRadio - Reallly good internet radio app, I use it mainly for listening to NPR in the morning - it works better than the NPR app.
Dropbox - I don't actually use this all that much either but I think the whole concept of Dropbox rules, being able to automatically have files at home, work & phone instantly...
Tipstar - yes, this comes in handy when your friends try to skimp out
Goodreader - If you download a book as a  big pdf, you can read them on your phone.

By the way, that new Netflix app just blew my mind!!!

That WFMU app is fucking great. Most used so far.

I see the point of the ceeFrenzy app vs. the browser. Definitely worth the $2.

NY Times Crossword app has been killing time too.

Even if I don't end up even using it that much, Rowmote pro is kind of blowing this luddite's mind!!! Downloaded the regular version way back and thought it was neat, but the $4 is totally worth it for the ability to use your phone as a trackpad/mouse. For techy types this is probably no big whoop, but it definitely feels like magic to me right now  If you have your computer hooked up to your tv, it's kind of nuts -- now you can actually pause shit you're watching on megavideo or whatever via remote.

On top of that, Just discovered the iPhone also has the ability to learn all your regular remote codes. Doubt I'd shell out the $40 for the infrared adapter thing, but kinda crazy to think you could ditch all your remotes and use your phone as a universal remote.  Geek magic!

Suntanned nerd apps:

WeatherBug Elite is the best weather app I've found - it lets you pick your weather station for a given location, gives you hour-by-hour forecasts, and without having to open it gives you a little icon to let you know there's a warning for one of your areas.

TopoMaps is pretty slick - you can download the USGS 1:24000 maps onto the phone & the GPS will show you where you are on the map within about 25 feet, add waypoints, etc.

iBird is a North American bird field guide; I don't find the field guide portion that helpful, but it's a great way to have a portable library of recorded bird calls.

Pasty nerd apps:

The Ebay app is really slick, if you do any chasing of anything on Ebay.

  The easiest way to get the initial wad of music on there is to make a giant dummy "playlist" with a jillion songs on it & copy that playlist onto the iPhone.  Alternately, you can set the iPhone to just randomly load new songs outta your library every time you synch to the mothership computer.

I think Rich is trying to get stuff from his iPOD->computer->iPHONE, right?

Apple doesnt want you to be able to take stuff OFF iPods or iPhones, but there's a bunch of freeware programs that allow you to do it. If you go to Macupdate and dig around you'll find them. I haven't done it in a long time, but the one I used before was called Ipod to Folder or something. You just download that, open it up, and it allows you to access the library on your ipod. There's probably better ones available now, but I think I usually just copied the whole thing. It won't mess up your ipod or anything. The one thing you gotta watch out for if you copy the whole thing is duplicates, which are kind of a pain to delete.

I guess this is what "sound clouds" or what have you could help in this area but that shit's too baffling for me.

mSpot.  Not sure they have it on iPhone, but I use it on Android.  Works, 2 free gigs that you can swap out at will from iTunes.

My most used apps so far are NY Times Crossword, ESPN Scorecenter and eBay. Still waiting for the opportunity to use cFrenzy app in the wild. Fall record show is coming up, I'll use it there and be "that guy"....
