This topic brings back some bad memories.  And reminds me why Chicago mostly sucks.

True. Being in Chicago that time suck. Tortoise was the sound of paint drying. That shit was over hyped.

yeah i guess if seeing great shows and buying from an avalanche of cheap, awesome records funneling through reckless meant chicago sucked, then it really sucked.  i had no problem seeing gastr open if it meant i got to see voice crack at the bottle, for instance.
[/quote]

That part is true. Yes, Great Shows, but the bands weren't from Chicago. And having Gasto de sol open for every fucking band from 92-94 was bullshit.

Suck it because some of the folks I was friends with drank will that Slint/Tortoise (and Liz Phair) kool-aid. Yeap, thanks for selling me all those great records for a buck a piece.

Are one of you guys going to defend Joan of Arc?

Hell no.

I dig some Gastr, why waste time with the junior league version?

Although Loy's umad @ Dave Grubbs is funny (and maybe true), but jesus christ like Jim O'Rourke isn't the biggest tool in the AVANT toolbox? Did you ever read those reviews he wrote for Your Flesh? or perhaps about his love for Van Dyke Parks? or remember when he joined Whet Bull's fave band, Sonic Youth? What a plumpkin....

It's true, Jimbo's solo song records are a handful of poo.  Dude shouldn't sing, and he shouldn't write songs, and he shouldn't be wearing those ratty schoolboy cardigans at his age.  I don't remember his YF reviews, I just remember thinking back in those days, Why the fuck is this guy EVERYWHERE?  And that useta annoy me.

Van Dyke Parts is fookin' awful, man.  That Song Cycle turd is like listening to a Vegas shrimp cocktail -- fuckin' stupid!  At least the shrimp cocktail isn't pretentious.  Hell, I once had a orgasm eating a shri

But I think Jimmy O' is a guy w/ a good set of ears, and he's not the kinda dude to put on airs.  Just goes in there, does his bloop-bloop-pluck and leaves, like a panda bear poopin' in the woods.  Also, is he a fruit?  I always wondered.

Wait, what's the bottom one?

'Tired Sounds of...' is a masterpiece. Like angels giving you a temple-massage for the rest of eternity...

Only thing I've listened to going to sleep more is 'Selected Ambient Works vol. II' and 'Music for 18 Musicians' and maybe 'Music for Nitrous Oxide' (Stars of the Lid's debut). Labradford's 'A Stable Reference' is up there. I've always thought about starting a 'What Music Do You Sleep To?' thread but figured there'd be a lot of 'Angry Samoans' or 'sleeping is gay' responses.

Nah, he moved to Japan to have one of those android girlfriends. I guess that's pretty fruity.

Before he was a big ol' avant-muckity muck, he was in Illusion of Safety for awhile and would write these painful page-long reviews of clang n' drone and modern comp and minimal yadda yadda kinda shit. I am a bit of a masochist, so I of course enjoyed the pain.

i really like(d) stars of the lid, labradford, aix em klemm, lots of that kranky ambient stuff.  windy & carl too.  i also think that tortoise has its moments - i actually really like "DJed" and much of the s/t record.

bottom one's Mi Media Naranja - Labradford

this makes me want to go dig up old shit, not sure i'd find much that aged well th

i thought tortoise was great live. really hard ttrying to explain that on the merits of their recordings which are pretty boring. i bought the last lp they put out, listened once and cracked the fucker over my knee, so bad. last time i saw them too the live set was getting old, or maybe it was just them. have totoal respect for evertyone in that badn minus mcentire the farmboy. i remember liking the bass players side project brokeback. encourage folks who are into this stuff to check out loftus and red red meat - star above the manger

ah, I kinda thought so. only ever had a cdr.

I saw Tortoise play quite a few satisfying live shows. I mean, it wasn't Funkadelic or nothin, but it got some kinda job done.

Labradford were weird but great live. Like just hovering in stasis. and so precise. Loud but also pin-droppy (new fave expression btw).

back to punk...

I thought Mi Media Naranja was when Labradford lost the plot.  I sold it long ago, and don't remember it being offensively bad or anything (as opposed to Scala and Seefeel), just not good.  Extra points decremented for "mysterious" cover.

Well, that was the one they started bringing beats into it, yeah? I mean, I don't think Pan American has aged all too well.

I liked Labradford a lot.  Never thought of 'em as post-rock, but I guess they sort of fit in.  My ex-GF and I spent a lot of nights listening to A Stable Reference after a round of hard fuckin'; that was probably their best record.  We saw them at The Cooler shortly after that record came out, opening either for Tortoise or Ui, I forget which.  They had just added the bass player and I think ex-GF was disappointed 'cos she thought the two geeky dudes were cute as a duo.

The riff sounds like an isolated Glenn Branca guitar orchestra part. What do you think of this one, Loy?
