The Make-Up

Opinions?

I listened to this band a lot when I was 17-19, recently started listening to them again. "Born on the Floor" is pretty undeniably killer.

Live, they were entertaining...until it went on too long.  On record, it's pretty much worthless.  Better on paper than in execution...too many boring various studio and live LPs, singles, videos and other bullshit.

Had they made ONE record, it might've worked.

Shit band, shit records. The decline of Ian Svenonius's contributions to the realm of the worthwhile has been so steady you could set your moon calendar by it...from N.O.U. to the Make Up to "Play Power" to publishing books of shitty poetry to DJing Lizzy Mercier Descloux records at hipster dance parties. what's he gonna do next...guest spot on a Beck album?

Destination: Love's a pretty tight album. It's not as good as NoU, but it's definitely a little easier to listen to

Hmmm, I like Lizzie Mercier Descloux. I do suck tho. (and would be totally into dropping some rhymes on a Beck album)

Make-Up were good live. 'In Mass Mind' was the only one I ever really had time for. It's a gimmick, but no more than, oh say, most garage or budget rock bands.

"In Mass Mind" is by far my favorite album of theirs. Maybe I just have a stupid emotional attachment to it, but I still like it.

Whatever, don't let the relentless haters of Termbo (of which I am a proud member) get you down. There are no guilty pleasures. I mean, you've checked out the City Rock thread, right? And threads praising Steely Dan and Radiohead. Did you see the outpouring of love for Faith No More? (led by myself)

Never liked this band, and never understood Ian Svenonius's appeal. I'll admit that he took the concept of style over substance to another level, but it never ever spoke to me. He's of course sainted by many, but I'll pass. I do like that interview show he did for Vice. Make-up were "good" live but in this completely transparent way. But that's just me.

I'd like to see you try.

OK, Make-up were "entertaining" live. Is that better?

Nate K, you're fired for not being at the Double Negative/Kim Phuc show.

Nah, no vom. Dave Martin was there, and he had already seen another show AND picked up his kid from a birthday party. Fuckin Renaissance man, that guy.

AND he works at one of the world's prominent "independent" labels.

We are all mere mice in comparison.

I think I saw him tearing it up in the pit too, mid-80s Pitt-style. One-man Wall of Death.

Had to YouTube 'em to remember what they sounded like (pardon my Alzheimer's). Could barely get through "Born On The Floor". I did own a 7" of theirs at some point during my teens, so I guess they sounded good at the moment.
