Why didn't anyone ever tell me that this band was cool?  Played here last night.  That guitar player is awesome.  And Alyse is a very good drummer -- there was one tune that she sang last night, too, which I thought was one of their best songs.  However, because I am a dumbshit, I forgot to buy a record.

i think manikin are OK. they have alot of hype behind them and i really feel like the records are lackluster. also they have to have some of the worst album art ever.

they have a handful of good songs but they arent gonna blow any minds.

I'd never heard 'em before and liked 'em.  That rarely happens to me anymore.  (Sniff.)

I might've been drinking beers in the Carbonas' van.  I really took advantage of everything SXSW had to offer.

I've mentioned them a few times on here.   I love that LP they did - particulary on vinyl. (I have some in my distro btw lastname).  The CD I thought was good - but on vinyl it smokes.  And yeah - I was glad to finally see them last night.  I wasn't sure how it would translate as a live show, as Tyvek didn't do it for me live (although I totally love their record) last week, but manikin were tremendous I thought.

The trumpet playing last night was superb.  reminded me a lot of A Certain Ratio's style of minimalist swirling brass section attacks layered throughout the music.  In fact, I haven't seen, or heard that sort of sound since ACR were around. There was no ego with the guy blowing straight into the mike so his sound could be heard above everyone else as I've seen many do before (did anyone else notice him stop Billiams from putting the mike right under his istrument?).  Just great use of the horn, as background, or foreground, or perfect hamonies with the guitar/vocals.  Great shit indeed.

That song that the drummer sings is on their LP - it's totally great.  buy buy buy!

They were really great live. The song with the drummer singing was one of the best songs. Their whole set ruled though.

totally...song she sang awesome. one of the dudes in the other band reminded me of paul reject in a weird way (2nd band of evening)...can't pinpoint it....

all bands were great though.

I had never even heard of them until a few hours before the show.

Dude!  Manikin has been going at it for 5 years now and I say it's about time people take notice.  And it has nothing to do with hype.  Alfie is a great guitar player and Alyse & the Beej are the most rock solid rhythm section in the city of Austin.  Good stuff.
