The Pipettes
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:47:17 AM »
Another example of how the general bulk of the American music-buying public are fucking stupid.  This band is relatively big in the UK with their singles selling out super fast but you can't even find their stuff over here.  The Brits understand real pop music and we get stuck with Fergie and the Pussycat Dolls.

Hinman was bragging up one their singles a while back:

Check out their entertaining, poorly-lip-synched and strangely errotic videos* here:

*somehow girl-group campiness and batted eyelashes make for a real turn-on.

I'm a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE 60's girl-group fan, but I don't like the Pipettes one bit!  It seems like slick modern blah-pop wrapped up in an ironic-60's package.  And the songs I've heard aren't that catchy, anyway.  And just 'cause songs have the "Be My Baby" intro (or some other genre-staple) means that it's the second coming Phil fuckin' Spector??

Maybe I just don't get it....gimme the Crescendoes any day of the week.

yeah.. it's a little too heavy on the cute, retro 60's thing.  but it is catchy, and far better than most radio-pop music.  and the girls are cute, which is all i really care about anyway.... especially the brunette.  whoa!

this band is OK! if they're getting play on the UK charts, that's cool! It seems like a mash-up of different girl-pop styles throughout the ages. nothin' to write home about, a little heavy on the Spice Girls thing, but their outfits are cute and I like the Carrie Nations/BtVotD rip in that one video.

I thought they played their own instruments until I saw the videos, though, so that is kind of a letdown.

Better than most radio-pop, sure.  But this band kinda' sucks.  Agony Shorthand's ability to hype a turd and have people convinced "it's real pop music" is far more impressive than the songs I heard.
Well, props to Jay if that's what you think he's able to do.  I'm not going to say I like something just because I saw it on Agony Shorthand, though, as I really do like the Pipettes and I was just using his review as an example of more praise of them.  I can think of a few examples of shit that Jay likes that I don't, Bright Black Morning Light being one of them.  And to be quite honest I actually expected a lot of negative posts on this topic as that seems to be the way it is with anything that doesn't fly completely below the radar around here.

Jay Hinman likes a lot of horseshit.  Also the Brits don't know fuck all about music.

Arctic Monkeys?
Art Brut?
Mando Diao?
Bloc Party?

NME and the British music press don't know shit.

I loved the record when I first heard it, but it's SO cute and SO pop it makes you sick after a while. I still like them in small doses, though.

Well you know what?  The British don't give two shits for Audioslave, Blue October, Stone Sour, etc. so give me Art Brut over regurgitated Alice In Chains (which was bad enough the first time) any day.  Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party might suck but at least they are ripping off good bands.  The artists that are revered over here don't even have that going for them.

Secondly, Jay does like a lot of horseshit but E I'm sure you do too.  Taste is relative.  Everyone on here has a lot of common middle ground but there's always going to be areas where someone's going to raise an eyebrow over something that someone else likes.  So fucking what?

The British press is the worst, people. Historically there have been many more periods of good bands making the mainstream charts there, but that's more because of the smaller population and the fact that everything's within a reasonable drive. We saw that kinda regionalism here in the 60s - it's hard for it to happen across this huge landmass at this point. If Washington were an island out in the pacific it wouldn't be surprising to see the Spits on the charts, for example.
