Folkways (http://www.folkways.si.edu/index.html) is a label started in the late 40s by Moses Asch. Asch and others documented then-neglected strains of American music like slave hollars, sea chanteys, country blues, hillbilly music, etc. and was the first to record Leadbelly. Folkways recordings are almost always field recordings. The studio stuff that there is is not slick. As Folkways aged they started doing the Ethnic series which has things like pygmy songs, dream chants, sounds of whirling dervishes, etc. some really cool record in there. they also started doing field recordings of thing that they thought needed to be preserved and/or that were disappearing  - things like sounds of the southwest (which has desert rainstorms, night sounds, etc), sounds of underwater sea animals, sounds of the carnival, etc (a series that was parodied by Gred Turkington in his Sounds of Adult Books Stores, etc). They also were among the first to release computer & early electronic music. Their discography is astounding and it is one of the most important labels in the history of music. Now the Smithsonian owns it and continues to release stuff.

I wouldn't mind hearing some of the hillbilly stuff if you can suggest something. Why is it one of the most important labels in the history of music?

I'm outta here for now kiddos. There are about 150,000 people strolling the downtown strip here in a frenzy to eat food, buy crap and listen to shitty festival bands. I have a nice buzz from sippin' whiskey for the past five hours, so I am gonna go and get CRUNK!

I think I've got about 6.  I would like to get some of those Oblivians 10"s, but I can't think of any others I know as essential.

My friend is really into the Folkways series and from what he tells me it's pretty popular.  Can you give me some recommendations for the ethnic series?

Uh, Teengenerate, Drags, Stiv Bators...that's about it for the good ones I've got. I've also got the Yum Yums one which isn't that great. Personally I'm not a big fan of the 10" format though.

Folkways: Why is it important? Read what I wrote. It was documenting things that majors didnt care piss for, sounds that would never have gotten released. Folkways paved the way for labels to start doing country blues and noncommercial ethnic music. Labels like Yazoo, Arhoolie & Document totally owe their existance to Folkways, as does Nonesuch's explorer series. Click on that Folkways link and read the history, look at the discography and catalog. I think there are even MP3 samples there.  Look at that stuff and it should be pretty clear why they are so important.

As far as recommendations of the ethnic stuff, it depends on what you want. There are records that are good and records that are interesting and that are both. I dont imagine you spending more than $10 on a folkways record even it I tell you it is the best record ever made, so rather than come up with a list, i suggest that if you see one and it looks interesting buy it. if you dont like it you can resell it. there is a lot of them on ebay and they go from anywhere from $5 to $100 depending on what is what. again, go through the catalog on their site and listen to samples. that is how young steve got a good calypso comp.

i have maybe 20-25 of these. they kind of annoy me for some reason...too short to walk away from, but too long to sit by and wait to flip.

my favorite is easily the Live at the Electric Circus.

and...
Gaunt - Whitey the man
RFTC - state of the art
Oblivians
Baseball Furies - allamerican psycho
