Maybe I'd just rather hear Christina Martinez sing anything over her ass-clown husband ('cept maybe "Cunt Tease" or "Alright" or "Sweet Little Hi-Fi" or... I guess anything by PG).

Maybe it's because Sam Cooke shouldn't sound like he's entertaining at a Vegas casino.

if the Harlem Square album is what a vegas casino sounds like; then old women from Iowa, sitting at the slot machine, have more soul than any white kid on a punk message board ever
too stupid to live, too lazy to die

Oh man, soul is hard because so many of the real killers are 45s by total unknowns....

LPs--
Al Green "I'm still in love with you"
Etta James "Tell Mama"

45s (limiting myself to ten)--
Jean Plum "Look at the boy"
Bobo Mr Soul "Hitchhike to Heartbreak Road"
Sam & Bill "I feel like crying"
Little Mary Staten "Helpless girl"
Masqueraders "Wake up fool"
Otis Clay "That's how it is"
Ann Peebles "I'm gonna tear your playhouse down"
George Jackson "Aretha, sing one for me"
Kenny Ballard & The Fabulous Soul Brothers "Down to my last heartbreak"
Eddie Giles "Losin' boy"

Honestly, when all is said and done, this is the best music ever made.

Isaac Hayes' "Hot Buttered Soul" is an overlooked classic.  Perfect for vino and babes.

Totally obvious and overplayed, but my favorite is Isley Bros "It's your thing" (sic?).  That has the coolest guitar playing ever.  Etta James whole Tell Mama LP is awesome.  Soul Finger by the Bar Kays.  Memphis Train by Rufus Thomas.  Bobby Womack has several whose names escape me.

Joe - Flip that Harvy Scales record over. The flip is better than Love-Itis (which is good, too. Thats a double A side if there ever was one).

Of course I know the flip. I've spun it at my parties before but I have so many better soul dancers that it really doesn't even warrant a spin any more. I still think "Love Itis" blows Get Down" to smithereens. That's some real down on your knees and pounding the floor shit right there. All the chords and horns and phrasing are perfect, he shouts "sookie sookie sookie" better than anyone I've ever heard do it, the lyrics are fucking amazing... I really think the sax on "Get Down" is pretty cheezy, plus it's just too long by about 20 seconds.

Technically, I guess the Black Keys are "greasy R&B."  By the way, the next person to use this phrase in earnest is going to get AIDS.  I don't make the rules, I just etc.

The problem is some people use it to describe r'n'b that ain't so greasy, they just think it sounds hip.

Otis Redding Live at the Whiskey A-Go-Go. But it has to be on CD, not vinyl. The CD has a way better track list and mastering job. The vinyl SUCKS.

But the 45 of him doing "Paps Got A Brand New Bag" from that show kicks ass.

I just got a picture in my mind of you sitting in your basement next to a record player, stop watch in hand timing your records and writing down the results.
