Completism
« on: October 03, 2006, 05:50:12 PM »
I just picked up Slayer "Diabolus in musica" 2xLP because I found it cheap and used.  Not surprisingly, it ain't so hot, which is OK-- every band of this stature is allowed a couple of missteps.  What might not be OK is my apparent need to own said missteps if I like the band enough.  My Stones LPs go later than they really should (especially when I'm missing early ones), I own the falsetto Discharge records, I own nearly every Black Flag record, no matter how unlistenably self-indulgent and wanky.  I guess the drive for completism over quality control is an early indication of a record collecting problem in gestation.

I had a short time when I was a completist but that mean too many bad bad records. Why own 5 shitty TSOL records because you like two? Or the horrible Adolescents records. Or the endless run of shitty Social Distortion albums. I mean, with Discharge, you have what one, two bad records? My friend, you are on a slippery slope and if you dont cut this complete crap up the bad records in your collection will out number the good 2 to 1.

Yeah, I cut out the librarian routine after moving the fuckers six times in six years, so no more kitsch easy listening records, no more "Live in 1978" addenda, no more rare B-sides lps for a band with three good a-sides, etc.

45s are superior for the rock genre anyway. It is the perfect sound medium for the form.

Oh yeah, the only bands I'm like this about, really, are Buzzcocks, Slayer and Discharge.  The Black Flag and Stones records are just so easy to find cheap that I keep biting, but it's not like I'm buying Social Distortion LPs or anything.

At one time I bought up anything Spacemen 3, Lazy Cowgirls (that got ugly after a handful of records), and a few others. I sometimes feel that when I really like a band nowadays I'm gonna buy up everything, but I just end up burning myself out on 'em, so I just scoop shit up as I see it. I know lots of people do this kind of thing, I'm just glad I got less obsessive as I got older.

When you buy collections of records you, sooner or later you will run into a completist. Last one I bought from a dead completist had a full collection of Zodiac Mindwarp and Sisters of Mercy records - everything including all those interview picture discs. I wound up selling the SOM in a lot, 30 items for $25. I tried to sell the Zodiacs but you can't sell them for 50 cents each.

Curious: How much do you pay for the whole collection?

Except when the local store buys from the Iron Maiden completist and you walk in one day to find every single 12" (singles, eps, live and albums) on the fuckin wall in the shop and all I can envision is dropping a pile of cash to cover an entire wall of my bedroom with every Maiden pic sleeve (Aces High!  The Trooper! Women In Uniform!  Phantom Of The Opera!).  But I didn't do it.  Shit.

Depends on the collection. I've paid $500 for a few, $1000 for a few, $2000 for one. Depends on what is in it and how many records, condition, how fast I think I am gonna sell a lot of them, etc.
