Figgs "Lo-Fi at Society High" LP

Second-hand copy at a store by my house-- should I buy it?  Never heard them but think they were being discussed here ages ago, just can't remember the verdict.

Now that's exactly what I wanted to hear....read same on a couple of interweb sites, but prefer to hear it from actual people.

I'd rather listen to Napalm Death.

Probably their best album. They used to be a colossal live band, but I haven't really enjoyed their shows in a long time. That record's as close to a guilty pleasure as I have.

Slick English-style bar-pop isn't a circle I usually travel in. They were the best Slick English-style bar-pop band in the world at one time, though.

No offense to any fans of this band, but I never got the appeal x 1,000,000.

They were the kings of the heap for the second half of the 90's--the first three albums are all excellent (Lo-Fi, Banda Macho and Couldn't Get High) but then they lost a guitar player and stripped down their sound and sorta got lazy in the songwriting department and first I stopped buying the albums and now I hardly care at all anymore.  Those first three records I'll listen to til I'm six feet under, though.  FYI Simon, Banda Macho was the major label try on Capitol (vinyl available) and Couldn't Get High was the fall to earth afterward (indie label cd only unfortunately)--this might be my fave by these guys.  They put out a handful of stellar singles in the 90's as well (Miss Velvet, Let's Get Arrested, One Hit Wonder).  Great band, great memories, great guys.  Unfortunately for me now it's all grindcore, keyboard art-faggotry and white-boy rap from here on out--I've seen the light, Kevin!!!

Great live band, never really ended up listening to any of the records though.

I've only really heard Lo-Fi & Banda Macho which are great. Can't say that their pop songs aren't good. If you like the Figgs you'll like what the local GreenBay/Milwaukee band, Beach Patrol, is doing.

Beach Patrol got really good at some point--very pronounced early Elvis Costello influence in the vocals over top of that Yesterday's Kids rockin pop stuff.
