my opinion:

- if theres room for the live stuff (obviously there is), might as well include it, if only for historical purposes.

-records that can fit on one side easily should go on one side!  or go the shoot it up route, and put the same songs on both sides!

I need to hear your opinion before sending the material to the pressing plant.

I have an 8 songs studio session from an old unknown canadian punk band. The recording is from 1977 and it is their only studio recordings.Very fast and catchy punk rock,i would even call it "proto-hardcore".Very fast and ahead of it's time for 1977! The original master tape has already been baked and transfered!

Here is what i want to know...

1) Do you people prefer an 8 songs studio only 12" ep (17 minutes) with or without live songs as bonus?

2) Do you prefer an 8 songs release (17 minutes) on a one sided 12" or on a 2 sided 12"?

I just wonder weither or not i should fill the record with live material just to have a full lp although i'm not a big fan of live stuff. Please let me know what you think!

Easy-- two-sided 12" cut loud at 45, no live stuff unless it's really great.

Agree with Simon. There are enough reissues made blah by tacking on crap that shouldnt have been released to begin with (see Rave Up). Buck the trend. Put out a record that is 100% solid. No filler. And if you want include a CDr of the live stuff.

This might seem obvious but the point is to release a great record and a great record is one that makes you want to listen to the whole thing over and over, not one that you listen to the good songs and then skip the so so live set. YOu want a good example of a recent release by a long gone band, done right? The Ralphs LP.

I agree as well. Unless the live tracks are of a high quality.

Oh yeah, and given your description of this, you'd better be ready to press more than 500, because this stuff is HUGE right now, and unreleased real-deal '70's North American punk with proto-hardcore intensity will sell to several of the vinyl hound demographics across the board.  If this was on Ugly Pop, I'd definitely plan on selling at least 1000.  Just make sure you work at it and don't just sit around waiting for people to send you money...

Yep, 12" cut at 45 RPM, just the studio tracks. Four songs a side are plenty if it's good stuff.

Simon - key phrase is "if this was ugly pop." dude isnt ugly pop so he doesnt have the connections or rep that you do.

press 500 and if it sells out fast, press another 500. better to run out faster than you expect than press too many and have to sit on them for years. Especially if this is your first release.

Just to clarify, this was about printing 500 or 1000 jackets-- my advice was to save significant money by doing 1000 jackets right away then filling them with repress vinyl after an initial press of 500 sold through.

12" 45 is a kingly format. Under-used - appreciated - sexed.

Exactly roughly how much time in specific can you cram on one of those babies? 18 mins? 21 mins? 19 mins? 48 hrs?

As someone who has, sadly enough, written approximatly 975 record reviews over the years for a certain mag (which would be about a 350 page book) I can tell you that a review that does nothin but talk about how aces a record is, how every track nails it, is FAR better to see then one that has to qualify itself due to 'eh' live tracks dragging down the average. About half of the Rave Up lps should have been 12"singles with 4-6 tracks. And the other half are actually really good to great.

You can fit at least 21 from my experience.
