Tape War!

i'm starting a fucking 8-track cassette label any interest?

bands get in touch...

Not funny for a lot of reasons, including just not very funny (sorry) but especially because it's been done a number of times already.

Is there a dick in my brain or is everyone missing the obvious?  Burger Records is something worth bitching about for the plain and simple reason that they are STYLE/SUBSTANCE POACHERS.  They invest NOTHING into ANYTHING.  Wow, they put on SHOWS.  BIG DEAL DUMBASSES.  I can PUT ON A SHOW for free too.  I can also release a zillion cassettes a year for $100 for 100 copies.  WHOA MAN, HOW ARE WE GOING TO MAKE THAT $$$$$ BACK?!!!  They bank on labels like me putting out good shit on ACTUAL VINYL and ACTUALLY GIVING A FUCK...ACTUALLY TAKING A RISK...and then they go behind my back (and tons of other labels' backs too) and just swoop in AFTER A BAND GETS POPULAR and asks them directly if THEY WANNA DO A TAPE VERSION ON BURGER.  It's a lame move because it makes the entire substance of "Burger Records" basically being some retarded glorified TAPE COLLECTOR who collects OTHER PEOPLES RELEASES onto a few tapes and then calls themselves a fucking label.  Give me a break.  They MIGHT be changing their "business model" now....now that they've sold 2,500 KING TUFF REISSUED TAPES....but this model I described is pretty much the ESSENCE and the CORE of what the fuck BURGER "RECORDS" (HOLY FUCK, CAN I GET EXTRA QUOTES WITH THAT>>???????!!!) actually was.  I really don't care that someone releases a ton of tapes...but that;s not what this is.  This is straight up taking credit for everyone elses good taste/sense of what the fuck is going on...then paying some measly investment and treating EVERYTHING like a minor task to get done with NO LOVE FOR IT.  Its like a race to get tapes done....like they are little scene cred points.  "Oh cool, got another point for being on top of that trend now!"  TAPES ARE FINE.  JUST FIND YOUR OWN BANDS, RECORD NEW MUSIC, MAKE NEW ART, AND PROMOTE IT YOUR GOD DAMN SELF YOU FUCKING CA FAGGOT LEECHES.

At least this is a hatred for Burger that I understand and I'm glad someone finally stated it but isn't that just them out hustling other labels and finding a niche for themselves and then filling it?  The cassette is clearly the inferior Pabst Blue Ribbon of media but if kids at shows are going to buy it for $5 instead of dropping $12 for the superior vinyl, shouldn't that option be celebrated to some extent for being good for the artist (who is seeing some profits from the tape sales, I assume) and ultimately good for the scene because that kid will eventually have the money to buy your awesome Useless Eaters LPs when the music bug has crawled into the recesses of his/her brain.

Also, I mentioned it earlier but Burger is now doing exclusive vinyl releases too that are pretty strong.  Pangea - Living Dummy, Nobunny - Raw Romance, Lovely Bad Things - EP, Cosmonauts - If You Wanna Die Then I Wanna Die, Natural Child - For the Love of the Game and others that I'm less excited about.  If their business practices of going behind labels backs to put out silly cassette tapes at budget prices allowed them to put out all of these LPs on vinyl, I'm all right with that trade off.

That's Ed, going to the beach with tapes is no way to live.

I don't like the mutual back scratching of the Burger Boys and Girls, that is all. Nothing else. Basically what I also hate about all music "I'll like your band if you like mine" type shit.

The interest is def there. There's a shop I go to with a whole wall of "used" (chuckle) 8-tracks, which cost 6 or 7 bucks each, and are lovingly thumbed through by complete wastes of life who are perpetually looking for stuff.

What do they seek? I don't know, and should ask them. They're probably looking for Tusk or something. I won't actually ask them, as I picture them lecturing me about the "beautiful and underrated sound that comes from the medium" or some shit.

*Burger Tapes should get a leg up and make 500 Ryan Adams 8 tracks.

When I wanna listen to some goddamn music I want it NOW goddammit and not 4 months down the road like with TTT. I will take my Bunnywunny and the Apple Fartpies on cassette (for half the price!) NEXT WEEK, thank you very much. Not thru TTT on a record (for 3 times the price!) after the Mayan calendar has EXPIRED and I am on fire, thank you very much.

Why don’t label invest 100$ more and put out a tape along every LP they release so Burger won’t be able to "steal" those release from them. Seems like doing tape is no financial risk anyway, no real time consuming and easy money to recap.

I’m no label so i’m just asking but I kinda know the answer: they (labels) don’t give a shit about tape and don’t want to deal with that, which is totally relevant and understandable, you already have enough shit putting out your own vinyl (maybe CD also in some case) so who  wants to bother with another useless format right? That is totally fine, then why not letting other people take care of that business.

I don't have many pie graphs around my place so I can't tell you if Burger Records is "filling a niche".  I can't speak to their keen business acumen either because I am a fucking idiot who goes into debt chasing what I love.  You will all see a few releases this fall that will have a quality to cost ratio that will blow your God damn minds.  This will be the latest example of "what the fuck I'm on about".  Burger Records on the other hand, works at Bain Capital, and gave my grandmother cancer.  Now, I have to go steal all of In The Red's catalog and press it to 10" because there is a huge NICHE for 10"s of everything ALREADY SELLING ON LP.

Why don’t label invest 100$ more and put out a tape along every LP they release so Burger won’t be able to steal those release from them. Seems like doing tape is no financial risk anyway, no real time consuming and easy money to recap.

I was literally going to do EXACTLY THIS.  But then I realized I would be SO FUCKING GAY.

I doubt there is a niche for that, it is the same problem than LP and 45; You can't listen to these at the beach or while swimming at the river.
