Graham Lambkin, 'Softly Softly Copy Copy' off the Penultimate Press' 'Solos' box set.

I'm thinking I'd love for somebody smarter than me to explain to me why I enjoy Lambkin's work so much. It doesn't really make a lot of sense as far as music goes but I just found myself loving it over the course of the last year, especially on headphones. The booklet that comes with the box set contains very interesting insight, has someone ever done anything like a podcast about him? Could be cool.

BTW: It's a shame there aren't cheap Shadow Ring represses out there.

Amy Winehouse - Back in Black

I am about to say something about the great Amy Winehouse that often never gets said. Let’s face it. Her first album is just a copy of the cursive singing style pioneered by Erika Badu back in 1996 with Baduizm.

After that, Amy practically lathers on the blackface to make this odd album of nostalgic cultural appropriation from the 50s and 60s that lots of people who should know better stan unironically.  If you know anything about me from reading my words across this forum it is that I do not like drugs. I used to like drugs but I don’t anymore and I do not like the attitude that goes along with it. And Amy personified that in more ways than one of course. And also seemed to be an icon of the party life at the exact same time as I was deep in it and drowning miserably. This one was my sometimes soundtrack but my feelings for it have changed drastically. It really is disgusting. And heart wrenching, but not in a good way. I will go on record to say that I disagree with our culture’s Christian proclivity to turn everyone into a blasted Saint after they die. If Amy was still alive I have a feeling she would be getting raked over the coals for her behaviors and things she says and had said. She would be degraded in the media. She died at the right time to be turned into a martyr, because if she had died any later history would view her through a very mixed prism.

We saw how she and her children if you will were often unkind to vulnerable people, again and again and again and again. I wonder if she was ever even aware? I hope I am right.

The main point is what would be worse? Her alive but in a state of mind and behavior far below that of Tony Bennett, not knowing what’s going on. Under the conservatorship of drugs, still singing well but robbing it all from the American black experience. Or her dead and the world faking like she was this exceptional one of kind singer so her estate can profit while the black artists she copied must resort being influencers to get any kind of money.

Who the fuck knows who the fuck cares.

Agreed about Shadow Ring reissues. And about liking that kinda sound... I ask myself the same question sometimes. All I can say is that for me, the path leading to enjoying The Shadow Ring so much went from enjoying "shit-fi"/ lo-fi hardcore punk, then things like The Shaggs and the Velvet then modern bands like Meat Thump, liking "art brut" more than "museum art" for lack of a better term, etc. I like the fact that nowadays it doesn't take me any kind of effort to enjoy things like the Shadow Ring ; on the contrary, it's perfect music for me to chill to. It doesn't command my attention like it used too ; I hear plenty of hooks without having to concentrate. I also like the fact that liking these kind of sounds feels like the result of "training" one's ears for years/ decades/ whatever. Anyway, don't have much of theory, just ranting here.

On an unrelated note, people who dig Maxine Funke, Sybille Baier, etc should check out the new Myriam Gendron album on Feeding Tube, it's got perfect songs.

Also : glad I could hear the Emily Robb LP on Petty Bunco. It's got guitars and guitars only. It sounds like being trapped in a giant amp, or like the (Velvet) Guitar Amps Tapes if you couldn't hear the rest of the band AT ALL.

And that Men & Health EP is great too, not sure if I mentioned it before already.

Yeah, the Emily Robb is pretty great. It surprised me with the guitar only sound, but I like it. Very consuming and all encompassing.

Cola Freaks ~ talk about TermBore Golden Era...
More hated than metal around here would be the Action Rawk thang...I dig these dudes lately, heavy nods to both Detroit and Orstraria...
Kosmik Boogie Tribe - «Creatures of Habit/Optical Migraine» (live)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPiOnmEUfLA

And I was just listening to Voivod - Rrroooaaarrr: Saw them soon after that album came out with St Vitus and Celtic Frost (86 I guess), so it was pretty peak metal. Voivod should replace Megadeth in that ridonklous pantheon but whatcha gonna do.

Speaking of bands named after diseases, Malaria? Wtf cheap acid were they on in late-60s Sweden...

Cola Freaks were totally underrated. Seemed like a really unique, warped take on the pervasive KBD influence of a few years prior. Maybe didn't have anything quite as memorable as yr Final Solutions, or Functional Blackouts, or Feelers even, or insert other early-to-mid-00's American band whose name starts with the letter F, but what they lacked in hooks, they seemed to make up for in entrancing ~vibes~ wrapped in killer artwork. Great live band too, as witnessed at the one lone Gonerfest I made it out to. Listening back to one track now, and it almost seems like the midway point between the aforementioned US bands and the type of stuff Total Control, DIAT, Constant Mongrel, etc. would be churning out not too long after.

I checked out the Cola Freaks this morning for the first time and wow, am I ever sold. I’ve been reading these forums since the beginning so it is curious that even the name slipped my attention until now. I recommend it to anyone else reading these forums who may have missed out.
