I saw him last summer.  I'm not the biggest fan of his work, but I was entertained through most of it -- there was a heavy "storytellers" vibe between and throughout some of the songs.  He read excerpts from his book and tossed out some interesting anecdotes.  And, of course, played the old hits: "Whole Wide World," "Take the K.A.S.H.," a few others.  Not so good: The duet he did with the femme folkie who played before him (his wife or girlfriend, I believe).

I posted a review elsewhere of the show I saw in April. His book turned out to be good.

"I saw him in Vancouver on Sunday night, and thought he was great! He still has lots of energy and intensity, and even his newer material that I'd never heard was interesting noisy pop stuff. Performance-wise, I'd say it was in the same vein as a Jonathan Richman show, with the mid-song storytelling breaks (in time with the music and all, kinda beat-y if that makes sense). Worth the $12, for sure. I bought his book, but all I can tell from the first few pages is that he's very blunt."

Apparently, in the new Will Ferrell "vehicle," "Whole Wide World" plays a pivotal role. Like, he (Ferrell) is actually playing it in the movie. Motherfuckers. Hope it's a bomb, so I don't have to hear people saying "how much they love that song from that movie." Assholes'll probably think the fuckhead from the Libertines did it or something.
