Belfast/Dublin/Glasgow/Edinburgh
« on: September 23, 2013, 01:43:30 PM »
This might be a long shot, but anyone have any know of any shows (websites with listings)/record stores in any of these cities in Ireland and Scotland that are worth digging through? I'm going on vacation there for two weeks and really want to check some stuff out but I don't really know where to begin. Mostly looking for punk/power pop records, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Here's a place for Dublin, but this is going to be mainly hardcore stuff.

A venue to keep an eye on:

place for metal and some punk. Cheap pints and sleazy clientele. (I liked this place)

There's more, but I can;t think of them now.

Edit: check out THE PINT on Eden Quay too. More metal, but awesome place.

Whelan's is great. I think there's also a little art gallery somewhere on the north side that does shows.

The Pint is on the north side. So is the Twisted Pepper, which occasionally has shows.

I saw a couple of good shows downstairs at the Lower Deck too.

This is likely your best bet for Edinburgh live gigs or "club nights"-

Small amount of punk (mostly on the kbd fringes) and DIY stuff as well as a few modern hardcore titles but it's not really their remit. However - its a phenomenal shop and you be crazy to miss it while there.

There are a bunch of others, but they have less that interests me anyway.

It's also worth being aware that there are a lot of pop up style record fairs in dublin, but they seem to be advertised more on facebook, which I don't use.

The Flea Market can on occasion be good for records if you happen to be in dublin when it's on.

Probably overall though, ask on the forums for what's on when you have dates. Although facebook is favoured it seems.

Freebird is cool for the used selection. Into the Void is cool. It's worth a look through the records in the St George's market booth. I was on the whole disappointed with record shopping in Dublin. It's also worth checking out the Tower Records by Freebird. It's actually an independent shop with some decent stuff.

My best record finds in the past few years have all been at the Flea market . Record shops haven't been turning up much good used stuff(although I don't be record shopping much as I'm broke)

Be aware that the record shops in dublin have a lot of bootlegs/repros.
