New York is the best city in the world. I lived in Chicago, Providence, LA, Boston and Ann Arbor, and I know that's not everywhere, but  I feel like I've had my taste of other places.

BUT it's the worst place to start a band. Plenty of people like good music and there's a nice little scene here, but it's tough to pay for everything (especially rehearsal space.) House shows are kinda pointless here, as well. All the good touring bands do come through here, though, and there are plenty of good local bands.

I'd save a good deal of dough before moving here. The job market is getting better, as long as you find a decent job, you can live here pretty easily. If you have a trade skill that's practical (painting, etc.) there are lotsa opportunities and you could make a killing. Become good friends with a bartender.

A lot of people move here for no reason. Big mistake. If you do move here, make it worthwhile and do all the things that the city has to offer. Parks, museums, movies, etc. I don't get the people who move here into a shitty apartment and hang out in there one little area of Brooklyn. They might as well live in mid-Jersey for half the price.

There are still good deals in South Williamsburg and Greepoint for apts. They've been building a lot so the older apt.'s are going down or at least levelling in price. Another thing to think about is Jersey City. The PATH might be extending their hours later into the evening and Jersey City has some decent bars and shops opening. Jersey City is as clse to NYC as Williamsburg, it's just zipcode snobs won't move there cuz they don't wanna tell their friends back home they live in Jersey, so they move to Astoria instead, look at a fuckin' map. I lived in JC for 3 years and it was fine.

new york is also full of so many bargains its possible to get by on very little. i've been able to live much better since moving here than i was outside of new york. in a lot of other cities, even boston, you've gotta consider having a car to get around because of the limited hours of public transit. not the case in brooklyn. you can cut out so many of the bullshit monthly expenses just by hopping the bus, or riding a skateboard. and you never have to worry about being stranded out in quincy when the last T passes you by...

Avoiding bars helps too. I'll buy a few drinks at a bar every once in a while but not without having that slight feeling like I just got raped though.

I really loved NYC and I want to move there. My only problem is that I would really need to find something work-wise that I could handle. I didn't think it was that expensive there outside of the bars. I mean, you can eat for pretty cheap there. Rent is expensive, but it seems like rent is expensive everywhere outside of Wisconsin. When I tell people that I haven't paid more than a hundred bucks in rent in a few years, people generally shit their pants. I really want to get out of Wisconsin, especially since I have a really difficult time spending more than a couple of months at a time in Milwaukee and within a few months I'll know literally two people in Green Bay, both of whom are indians. Not a good scene. I think my next big purchase though is going to be a van and I'm just gonna live out of that again. Maybe I'll live out of it in NYC for a while till I get bored.

NYC is more expensive than SF for rent at the moment, altho things are getting tighter by the month here. A one bedroom in a skanky neighborhood is about $1600. But a mongoloid could get a job in this town in twenty minutes. AT THE MOMENT.

I dunno... from what I saw of SF and NYC, SF is WAAAY more expensive. I liked SF alot for the people I met, the food and the availability, price and lax attitude towards weed. NYC though is alot more my scene. I like dirt.

PATH train runs all night -- it's just not super fast at 3 AM.  If anyone need details about living in JC, contact me offlist.

I could have gotten a duplex in JC instead of where I am now. I still regret not taking that over what I have now but..oh well. I was afraid that if I got an apartment in Jersey that it would end up confusing things financially with school. I wasn't sure if I'd be paying out of state fees or anything.

Ditto

I've only had to deal with it a few times, but those few times I wasn't very happy.

i always felt like i was in another country for some reason when i rode it.  i guess cuz i spent so much time on the nyc subway.  i really like going to shows at maxwell's but afterwards i would always get so annoyed cuz it would take me like 3 hrs to get home to brooklyn!

NYC....a place to live.

New York's one of my favorite places to visit, but I could never under any circumstances live there.  I know it's nice not having to own a car, but I love having a car! The world is like 85% douchebag, meaning there are more douchebags per square mile there than anywhere else in the country. Everyone thinks they're in the center of the universe in places like NYC or LA, and that especially bugs me because those places are so shitty for things I love like great rock 'n roll, especially considering the population. Entertainment comes so easily that you don't get the crazy creative outbursts that happen out of sheer boredom. You're a media center, which tends to spoil just about everything good at some point. Then again, it's easier to be a "weirdo" in New York than Des Moines, but it's certainly not as legitimate an accomplishment. But for a few days, maybe a week or two, it's the coolest. So many things to see & do, it's complete overload.

It's too bad I can't find a smaller city that's got nice, unpretentious people & lots of shit I like to do. That's why I moved to Green Bay in the first place, but after resisting the migration to Milwaukee that everyone else took over the last few years, I figured I was stupid to stick around so Milwaukee it is, I guess. Fucking assholes. Kevin, you should just hit the south side like me & avoid a lot of those Riverwest annoyances.

Also, Chicago rules to visit but I'd end up stabbing someone if I had to live there. Minneapolis sucks. Milwaukee is dirty and crime-ridden. Everywhere is totally gay!
