Recommend me some places to stop between Chicago and DC
« on: February 25, 2014, 01:08:01 PM »
Driving solo from Chicago to DC, giving myself a few days to get there. Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh are all places i'm thinking of hitting- good records shops? thrifts? regional delicacies? strange attractions? other towns worth a visit along the way? Thanks in advance.

Toledo -- We always stop by Tony Packo's when passing through Toledo. They have the best chili dogs, fried pickles, chicken and dumpling soup, etc. Make sure you go to the original location at Front St.

Cleveland -- My Mind's Eye record store for sure.

Pittsburgh -- Check out the Monroeville Mall where they filmed the original Dawn of the Dead. Check out Joe Mama for dinner. It's just a diner, but wow... I had a sloppy joe there (it was the daily special) about 5 years ago and still my mouth waters... Also the Andy Warhol Museum -- awesome gift shop too. The Tiki Lounge on the South Side is amazing and serves strong (but usually not cheap) drinks.

Also, if you happen to stop by Detroit...

Lately good shows are at the Corktown Tavern, The Painted Lady, the Maidstone/Gravestone in Ypsilanti, Small's, and PJ's Lager House. Something Cold sponsors regular coldwave/post-punk/industrial events.

Noir Leather in Royal Oak still carries some cool punk/fetish stuff. Thomas Video in Royal Oak is like a cult movie mecca and still carries lots of VHS. There's also Joe's Army/Navy on Woodward in Royal Oak for cheap combat boots, fatigues, etc.

If you are coming to Detroit, let me know what you thrift for and I'll pm some good thrift stores...

Monroeville Mall:  I couldn't really recommend it unless the flick is the single most important movie in your life.  It is just a fucking mall and the ice rink was replaced by a food court years ago.  The only upside would be that if you do stop in Pgh then the mall is pretty much right on your way back to the turnpike (76) so it wouldn't be more than 15 minutes out of your way.  Pgh record stores are pretty well covered, but Jerry's is always worth a trip.  Depending on your stamina it could be quite a long stop.  Mind Cure is another favorite and I'll stop there before going deep on record stores. The Warhol Museum is cool and I can't really find any reason to recommend going to the South Side.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.  I've heard good things about My Mind's Eye and Jerry's.  Will have to hit the Warhol museum for sure too.
