Halt and Catch Fire punk muzik
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:55:20 PM »
Uh, so is anyone watching this AMC show? It's about the early 80s PC computer world and it's kinda whatever so far, but there's a punk chick programmer character who is like the cool punk girl out of a John Hughes' film.

I'm watching the fourth episode right now and so far, within the first 10 minutes, she has been listening to Really Red's "No More Art" and Bobby Soxx "Learn to Hate...." (show takes place in Texas, so they're really covering the angles)

In previous eps she has been listening to stuff like X Ray Spex, Bad Brains, Voidoids, Tubeway Army and more.

Who is selecting the music for this show, and how the hell can I get this job?

edit: the Bobby Soxx sounded a little weird (cover?)

there's an episode with the Dicks' "Lifetime Problems" and the Big Boys' "Advice".  Apparently The Hates'  "So What (If Your Mother Kicks Me in the Nuts)" features in an future scene.

The music supervisor for the show is Thomas Golubić. He's previously done similar duties for "Breaking Bad", "The Walking Dead" , "The Killing" and "Six Feet Under".

Another punk side-note: GG King worked on the set design crew for this show.

11 min into new ep & babe is listening to Dicks "Rich Daddy" on her Walkman. She has some really good mix tapes.

Show takes place in '83.

Sick. So, it's filmed in Atlanta?

I remember the hurricane that's in the newest episode. I was in New Jersey but we got hit there too. I remember riding my bike in it, it was nuts. But fun.

Actually, prob not the same one. I feel like that one was in '84. Or maybe that was the blizzard. Fucking senile, put me out to pasture.

It's back.

It's 1985 and in this episode punk programmer Cameron was listening to "Pink Turns To Blue" by Husker Du on her Walkman and then she was in a club where the original version of Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown" came on. Also in her office she's got posters and flyers of bands like The Replacements, Fear, The Clash and English Beat. The more punk looking flyers are hard to read but look convincingly photocopied.

Ahhh, I thought this thread was about punk muzhiks, as in russian peasants.  That seems much more interesting than some stupid television show about computators.

I had really high hopes for this show after the first episode but it never fully panned out. It kind of felt like they really didn't know what to do with the story. In the end the music was one of the better parts.

A liked it well enough, thought the first season was decent. A bunch of reviews of the new season are saying it's way better, and based on the first ep, I can see that. So I'm hoping it delivers. Still find it more interesting than many other shows and the characters are certainly idiosyncratic. They feel a little more real and behave strangely, which is closer to the way things are, even if it's occasionally melodramatic. I dunno, not gonna mount a huge defense but I dig it.

Still on that Halt punkwatch:

Hell yeah, Gordon was doing blow to "I Am The Fly."

Didn't recognize the first cut from the other room but it sounded fairly KBD-ish, kinda early GG.

Then there was something noisy in the background during one scene that could've been Really Red again ("Starvation Dance"?). I don't think it was though. (Meat Puppets?)

Halfway thru is a background garage rocker that sounds familiar but I couldn't place it. Almost Lyres-y. Def contemporary garage, not '60s.

And one of the Mutiny coders has a sick Butthole Surfers shirt.

I liked it enough to watch the first season in two days on Netflix and will definitely watch the second when it streams. I think it has some really interesting characters but never spent the time to really develop them. Hopefully season 2 does better and honestly my issues with it are pretty minor compared to most tv.

Just finished the second season, it gets way more new wavey . But I don't think I'd ever heard freeze IOU before, kind of a saccharine banger

And I should note this show has the most aesthetically pleasing intro sequence I've ever seen. The main melody is really similar to the solo on the damned's "love song", to the point that it's always in my head after the titles roll

They use  "Range Life" in the latest episode,  I wonder if that was more expensive than all the Texas and California punk combined? I imagine the license for Bobby soxx  is just getting an intern to contract hepatitis , or a dozen Mickey's caps
