i remember once, a dozen years ago or so, attempting to explain to a gay friend what i really meant when i said "faggot."  he eventually accepted that I didn't mean anything horrible by it, but he did not agree with me at all. i thought he was being overly sensitive.  i still am embarrassed by that conversation.

I thought "Louie" covered this topic pretty well. So well that it's cringeworthy and kinda fucking enraging there is any debate here. I actually was a lot more openly queer before I started going to shows regularly and the inherent (and largley unintentional) homophobia of the scene pushed me back deeped into the closet. Some people in the community were upset years later when we were all older and supposedly a lot more open minded and thoughtful when I started fooling around with a well respected member of the community. Many of those people even had *A* gay friend, so of course it's not possible for whatni experienced to be true.

I was also getting called "faggot" in the 80's. I too had long hair, and sure I was called faggot for being a metalhead and a punk, but before I became a metalhead or a punk I was getting called "faggot" because I was effemite/queer.

Like I said, I understand people will continue using that type of language. And I will continue responding with violence.

I guess if I was some loser from Jersey who did little with his life other than collect multiple copies of the same record, I may hate myself enough to continue using words like "faggot" in 2015 and complain about young people verbally confronting people who use that kind of language.
