On topic: Thee Oh Sees. Hard to listen to them today, except maybe Sucks Blood and some songs from their Stonehouse sessions. Master's Bedroom didn't age well.
Never thought there was anything there with that band. Sounds like indie garage to me, and I think they put one over on people due to the "high NRG" live show.
True story: the name change was a Greg Lowery idea, otherwise he wouldn't put their record out. Heard him say that myself during an interview in october 2001, at their first italian date.
Well yeah. Did that shit a good number of times. "Artwork" was another thing he dominated, which worked out fine early (the whole Rip Off aesthetic fit perfectly together with the photocopied b&w covers) but looks just awful once color popped up. Except that Spastics live thing, which looked awesome.
On topic: For me Jay Reatard's Blood Visions fits the bill more than anything else.
Also, i admit i really loved the first two Ghetto Ways albums, but listening to them now i feel embarrassed. Other bands that for me really lost their luster are the (later day) Boss Martians, The Flakes and Sons of Cyrus. Also, all things considered, M.O.T.O. is pretty generic and boring save for a few songs that somehow became classic. I was pretty obsessed with MOTO at some point but in hindsight, that shit definatlely lost their luster!
Jay's first 45 is great. I wish the tone were similar for later solo stuff. Blood Visions is a good LP. Outside that, not really a fan, though he's clearly skilled and I respect that. I also wish he wouldn't have done the live thing where he hated even being there so he hit fast forward and played as fast and straightforward as possible, gutting dynamics.
Never dug any of the bands you mentioned outside The Flakes. I like 2 of the singles a good bit and thought the LP was a turd on arrival. Listening back, I have to agree that even the 45s don't sound that great at this point. MOTO's best stuff, by far, is pre pop-punk early MOTO where it was more, uh, indie or something but also way more varied and organic. Uneven, but that's where his songwriting shines. I liked that Crim IQ first big MOTO record because it had some giant-ass hooks and funny lyrics, though I'll probably never listen to that again. Checked out some of the early stuff not long ago, and thought it was still sounding pretty cool. Live they were one of the most pointless things ever, apologies to Paul and the nice folks who've sat in over the years. But the same exact drumbeat every song and it went on for what seemed like days.
Atomsmashers might very well be the worst Rip Off record ever and to be honest, pretty much everything the label released this side of the millennium was crap save for 2 or 3 records (Marked Men and Kidnappers are noteable exceptions). Lids, Shop Fronts, Kill-aWatts, Suspicions, last Zodiac Killers Lp all don't hold up very well imo.
Marked Men...love those people. Loved the Reds. Only really liked the first MM album at the time, honestly, and even that might be tough to stomach right now. Kidnappers never did anything for me, either. Shop Fronts, same...Lids I still think were good. Basically aiming for Supercharger and coming up with a number of good tunes...and they were ridiculously good at the Blackout years ago. Suspicions were only good for one glorious debut single. Everything else has paled or sucked. KAW I like selected tunes throughout - great live band. Zodiac Killers still have some rippers on the first LP, and a few songs I like spread throughout later, but I suppose I wouldn't care if I ever heard any again. I loved how Greg trolled the Blackout crowd by showing a full-set video before playing; I also loved how the Rhythm Chicken trolled them in Green Bay by playing in the girl's bathroom the minute ZKs were done, denying them a "proper" encore. Greg was livid.
