i just got help on my own, or so i thought.   the doctor never really told me anything about them and all i knew was i felt better.  and he would load me up...way more than i needed.  before i totally quit the other thing...they were a safety net.

Initially i got them from a very sketchy doctor...got in trouble there so,yeah...decided to get them off the street for years in order to avoid other shit.  they turned out to be way harder and more drawn out to kick. like night and day, especially the mental shit that follows.  a lot of people see it as a silver bullet to get off opiates, buts its just robbing peter to pay paul.

im still not quite there, i dont think, but the cravings have subsided a lot.  just never know what kind of day yer gonna get when yougo to bed at night.  could be ok, or could be a real shitter.

Good work. If it makes you feel any better, I go to NA twice a week, and I know literally dozens of ex-opiate addicts who now lead great lives. They all say it was hell at the beginning. As Churchill said, if you're going through hell, keep going.

Way to go, everyone.  I'm looking forward to a sober January and hoping that I kinda just forget to start back up when February comes around.

Try these:

Bill W. - A Documentary About the Co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous

Seen this on PBS. Great documentary. You can put in a request at your local library to have them order the DVD copy if you want to see it. Most libraries have a "suggest a purchase" button on their online site. Pretty easy to do generally.

Jack Grisham of TSOL. Super funny guy but also fuckin' smart.

65 minutes of Jack speaking at an A.A. meeting:

Here is Jack on a radio show from back in 2015. I haven't listened to this one yet.

He also has a book out about alcoholism as well. You can also request that your local library order this book if you want to read it.

Quit drinking and smoking at the same time going cold turkey. I was permanently irritable for about 4 days while withdrawing. It's been about 2 months now, and I feel good. My plan is to remain completely abstinent. Been buying club soda and pretty decent non-alcoholic beer from the grocery store when I want to hang out with pals and enjoy some drinks with them. As others have said, exercise really helps. My complexion has cleared up, depression has gotten less severe, I feel hyper-focused and motivated, sex drive has improved, noticeable weight loss. All positives.

I'm in Canada, so not sure if these are available stateside, but the non-alcoholic beers I'd recommend for anyone looking for something close to resembling a proper beer are:

- Clausthaler
- Erdinger
- Grolsch
- O'Douls Amber
- Budweiser Prohibition

NA beer has been a godsend to me. I am four years sober, but still like to go out to bars now and then. Having that option really helps.

Saw a few interviews with Jack Grisham; he's a really intelligent guy and has a good take on the 12-steps. He is also a bit verbose and can drag on forever.

Refuge Recovery is really starting to pick up in some places. I haven't read the book yet but this might be a good option for people who don't wanna do the 12-steps. It's a Buddhist path to recovery.

I am pretty lucky that myself and a couple friends decided to stop drinking around the same time. We all hung out at one bar and the owners wanted to support us so they make sure their NA beer is always stocked. It's Buckler which would not be my first choice but I won't complain. It makes all the difference to be able to still go out and be social and not feel the pressure as much.
