ROKU
« on: February 01, 2017, 01:35:12 PM »
Finally got one of these fucking things. Night Flight channel is fucking incredible and well worth the 2.99/month just for New Wave Theater and TV Party alone, not to mention all the Pac NW wrestling and documentaries. Anyone got any recommendations on good free channels? They have a friggin Shout Factory channel that is amazing. Shudder too. Think Im ready to cut the cord officially. Anyone use Hulu or SlingTV? I already have Amazon Prime and Netflix and am trying to figure out how to get the most out of less $$ now.

Crackle is a great free movie channel. Also check out the Grant Hart doc on Amazon Prime. There was also a great doc on WFMU on Amazon Prime but it might be gone by now. This is my first post one here btw.

get RARflix which is a modified version of Plex that you can install "unofficial" channels on to get some tv/movie/etc stuff that wouldn't normally be available.  it's a little work to get it set up and you have to run something on a computer at the same time, but i think its worth the effort.

Yeah I haven't had cable or anything in years just Roku. Netflix, shout, crackle, popcorn, a few more free ones. I stopped the night flight but only because I watched everything. Dif worth $2.99. So about 10 dollars a montn or so. There is a black explotation Channel and film struck has criterion and was supposed to be able to stream by Roku soon. I have also watched a bunch of movies I've never seen just on YouTube through the YouTube channel.

Get a VPN so you can get the BBC iplayer, which has tons of awesome stuff.  VPNs are also useful for getting around MLB blackouts.

Hulu is the best one if you like TV, they have just about everything. Netflix is pretty crummy and unnecessary if you ask me. Also the ESPN classics section on the app for ROKU is really good. Have been watching old Arizona college basketball games and some of the fights in the boxing section. Oh! Get the PBS app, it's free and there's great stuff on there especially Frontline.

Check out exodus for Kodi if you have a laptop or something since it doesn't work with Roku directly, but that streams torrents so virtually anything you search for can be found and streamed and mirrored from your laptop to your TV. We bought a Roku box as well but had I known then what I do now I would have just made a Kodi box out of a Rasberry PI or gotten an Amazon Firestick as that can run Kodi, I guess.

Not free but FilmStruck is coming to Roku apparently (it might be already). It is the streaming service Criterion and Turner set up. My only critique at the moment are the lack of Turner titles and the resolution quality of some of the films. Quality wouldn't bug me so much but some of them look like complete crap on the LED tv I have. Streamed the criterion copy of Lola Montes though the other night though, looked beautiful.

Got one last month and love it.  Hadn't signed up for Night Flight yet even though it's only 2.99 a month because yes I'm that cheap, but the added knowledge that they have Pac NW wrestling is enough to push me over the edge.

The Firestick is the way to go. You don't need a computer to set it up and I have Kodi for movies and use Mobdro for live tv streaming. Mobdro blows away Sling because you get channels from all over the world and of course it's free! It takes less than half an hour to setup too. I have a Raspberry Pi setup too, but plan on setting that up for gaming now that I have the Firestick.

Here's a link for installing Kodi and Mobdro on the Firestick.  https://youtu.be/PyX-gQviJhs Stop at the last step and go to https://youtu.be/ZvdC5c5m9-Y for the best Kodi build. The bitch in the 2nd video is annoying as fuck to follow, but she knows what she's doing.

Edit: Sorry about the links. Copy and paste those bastards, I promise they work.

I have Roku, but have a feeling in Canada the options are way shittier than the US. The NFB app is cool. Lots of weird old Canadian shit on there. Richie, I'm assuming you already have the NHL app? It's OK. You should start an unofficial Termbo channel/app.

Lots of this other stuff you guys are talking about sounds next level. So crazy you can use Raspberry Pi to get free TV.

The Firestick is all set up through the remote. Nothing to unlock, you just turn on apps from outside sources and the video walks you straight through.  You can get all your sports through Mobdro or Kodi. I'm a big boxing fan and love being able to watch European matches on Sky through Mobdro.  Kodi carries all sports too, including boxing and wrestling ppvs, and of course every NHL game.
