Who reviews stuff anymore?
« on: July 08, 2017, 08:12:57 PM »
Trying to help find some resources for review for some friends with local music projects. Here obviously, MRR, YellowGreenRed, where else do people send punk or experimental music for review now?

Tom Lax and Doug Mosurock- Still Single Blog. Good reviews will help move units.

A good word from Tom Lax moved 50 units for me. No joke. Mosurock moved about 10. Razorcake, I love 'em, but a killer review from them and MRR moved ZERO.

Is Byron Coley and Thirstin' More still doing their Bull Tongue?

Send samples to a few choice distros. Some of them write killer reviews.

Siltblog has not been updated since January '13, but I'm sure he'd appreciate Blood Noize quite a bit! Maybe they'll be to his blog what TNV was to the label LOL. But yeah, everyone I'd normally recommend seem a few years away from it now.

Do people still buy print mags like Razorcake and MRR? Or is online king now? And blogs? Like, if you were to do a modern Horizontal Action type analog print mag (minus the Hustler vibe), is there still an audience? I'm way out of the loop.

I buy MRR (download) but it comes out a month late. Just bought last months issue today. I don't have a place convenient to me to buy the new ish. Maybe Laurie's Planet of Sound but they seem more keen on selling novelty records and what not. I tried to trade records there sometime ago I brought in Modernettes they told me they only would buy stuff like the Thee Ohsees. I haven't been in there since. If I lived in Logan Square I'd have better luck picking up fanzines.

Josh Rutledge @ Faster and Louder writes really nice reviews. Not copy/paste internet bullshit.
Heatwave have given me favorable coverage and they are both online and in print. I sent MRR a bunch of tapes so wondering if they will review them. They will end up in the Demos section. The Primitives and The Prissteens will end up in the Demos section if they review em.

Also for what it's worth I do stuff for the 53rd and 3rd blog. I do the 'Record of the Day' every Friday.
And when i feel like it I do interviews, and I can also do Premieres. I don't fancy myself much of a writer, and I need to be legit interested in whatever it is i'm talking about. But I get lots of hits from the site according to Bandcamp stats and I think the site has 3000+ followers on twitter and facebook. I'm happy to listen to things and post Records/Videos of the day and Premiere stuff if I dig it.

I still buy MRR often, I'll basically buy whatever zines look even mildly cool or interesting. To answer your question accurately, people who do zines or write for zines are the people who read zines.
