Are the Jimmy Rock kids already that old??  I can't comment on yut of the west but fuck time is fuckin fucked...
When I was getting into Black Flag, the Rolling Stones had been around 20 years or so but now Black Flag has "been around" for 30+ years...

Quote
The numbers back him up. In the past decade, electric guitar sales have plummeted, from about 1.5 million sold annually to just over 1 million. The two biggest companies, Gibson and Fender, are in debt, and a third, PRS Guitars, had to cut staff and expand production of cheaper guitars. In April, Moody's downgraded Guitar Center, the largest chain retailer, as it faces $1.6 billion in debt. And at Sweetwater.com, the online retailer, a brand-new, interest-free Fender can be had for as little as $8 a month.

...
He is asked about Clapton, who himself recently downsized his collection. Gruhn sold 29 of his guitars.

"Eric Clapton is my age," he says.

How about Creed's Mark Tremonti, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer? He shakes his head.

"John Mayer?" he asks. "You don't see a bunch of kids emulating John Mayer and listening to him and wanting to pick up a guitar because of him."

No more Claptons? Boo fucking hoo??

"Our customers are getting older, and they're going to be gone soon," he says.

People in general don't seem to be into adrenaline inducing rock music anymore. Fucking U2 is probably too loud and wild for the multiple generations of weak dolts that live among us. anything that makes you feel extreme motivation or makes you cum should be suppressed.

lots of the kidses are buying up little cheapy toy synthesizers and making boring rip offs of the stranger things soundtrack and shit.

Or they'll buy 1 used dx7 and play presets drowning in reverb and call it "Berlin school".

You hope that means more kids stumbling into something resembling synth punk. But o ya 99.999999999999% "synth punk" is garbage unremarkable

If you need to be reassured that underground punk/HC/Rock is alive and well and
thriving...go to a show in Mexico or better yet play a show in Mexico.

It's still a vital thing there...and it's very youth driven.

As far as the U.S....I'm at the point where I play shows in weird out of the way places
that have tons of bored kids. I.E. NOT the major cities. I don't ever need to play the gentrified
parts ever again....

Out of the 1,000 kid fairly racially diverse high school i work in; I've seen a kid that wears a Sonic Youth shirt and a Descendents shirt. There's another kid that rocks a fairly cheesy metal vest. That's it. In three years I've never heard of a band made up of students.

Society sucks, mmmaaaannnnnn.

I'll also say this: I talk to a group of them, and any youth culture shit from 1955-1984 that a hipster growing up in the 90's was aware of needs to be explained to them. I have told people about: The Beat Generation, Andy Warhol/Velvets, 77' punk and 80's hardcore. I've talked to kids who were not aware of this shit. I even know a girl who didn't know who James Dean was.

They don't seem to care, either.

It's weird.

I read the first post and am way too hungover to read the rest so hopefully this isn't redundant...but I will say that 'punk' seems way bigger right now than it did in the 00s.  In those days punk/garage was really more of a niche thing, and even at that time many of the fans were holdovers from the 90s...now Total Punk and Goner are nearly household names for anyone that's 'into' music, even among squarer types.  Anything decent pressed in a limited edition is often sold out before I even know about it these days.

I'm 22 and I'm not surprised at all that kids aren't into punk anymore. Maybe it's different in other areas but in NJ I had very little contact with punk until I googled it one day a few years ago. No one ever told me what was what. Closest thing to a punk in my Catholic school was a hockey kid who liked CKY. I thought the Ramones and Dead Kennedys were classic rock. Kids today listen to Soundcloud rap:

That's what sad/weird high school kids are listening to in 2017 as far as I know.

When I was a sad, weird high school kid, I was crushing on a girl a year older than me and angsting out to a steady diet of Ramones, Circle Jerks and some Jesus and Mary Chain.

Time they are a changing, folks.

Is skating fizzling out? I pass by a few skate parks here in Chiraq and most of the skaters look like college kids or even older.

As for Jimmy Rockers most of them look mid-20s to me- receding hairlines, spare tires and biere guts... I think Jimmy Rock might be the last generation of punk. I LOVE many of the JR bands, but the aesthetic and sound is reaching back pretty far.
