Dachau Country Club- Flint's first hardcore band had an incredible twin-guitar attack- two different things going on at the same time. Gang Of Four slashings and prog rock noodling. Vocals are Buzcockian. The first 9 songs are punk- hardcore and post, then there is some punky reggae, but track 11 an instrumental is maybe the best example of the guitar interplay that you seek.

This demo is sick. Never heard of 'em before. It's too bad they never released anything on vinyl.

You got good taste. It is an f'n classic. Had they released a 7 inch, or ever played outside of Flint* they would have been considered one of the greats. Heck, people in Detroit, AA, and GR don't even know them.  I also have a later DCC session from 82 or 83 that is  very, very good too- more reggae though on that one though.

They were very prolific dudes. These are some of their other projects:

Anechoic Chamber Orchestra- Minimal synth/DIY/Experimental side project of DC

https://archive.org/details/AnechoicChamberOrchestra-VintageAnechoic1984

House of Mirth- post-DC indie/post-punk Track 11-Backfire- is the best

https://archive.org/details/Mirth

This Young Boy- post-DC New Wave. I think they were based out of Detroit. Not great, but has its moments.

https://archive.org/details/ThisYoungBoy-Demo1984

Godspeed- post-DC HC band that used to play out a lot with Born Without A Face. Some of the heaviest Michigan HC.

https://archive.org/details/GodspeedDemo

Free Cheese- pre-Godspeed HC with organ instead of bass

https://archive.org/details/FreeCheese

* They did play out of town dates in their late reggae iteration opening for REM, but I don't think the punk version ever did.

not a big fan of two guitars one is usually more than enough.
some that jump to mind are...
velvet underground
funkadelic
electric eels
riley/scanlon era fall
wire with bruce gilbert
j.l.pierce/kid kongo era gun club
haino and mikami's vajra
most of fela kuti's bands had at least two guitarists without ever sounding even remotely like a guitar band...
the glamour of failure

Good call; the Smashchords record is pretty special, kind of a WTF for 1982 or whateveritis.

Someone said Polvo earlier?  I didn?t like them the first time around because they were indie-rock dude-bros playing to same, but the album In Prism from ~2012 is surprisingly sexy and filled with taut fuckledy-buckle guitars.  I wish I had it!  I would give it to my woman.  Or any woman.

The Funkadelic track that stands out to me for the two-gtar frottage  is ?Funky $ Bill.?  Some wild slide leads in there too.  Reminds  me of ?I?m Gonna Booglarize You? by the Magic Band from a couple years later, similar dynamix.

Good morning!

I co-sign on the Smashchords. Polvo certainly do the interplay as well as anyone. I was indeed surprised, but charmed by their UNC sportstalk stage banter when the played Seattle back in the day. I was expecting nerds, and got jocks instead.

Thanks to all who have responded thus far - will definitely be checking out the stuff I wasn't familiar with, and (in some cases) giving a more careful listen to bands mentioned here that I've heard, but maybe didn't fully appreciate.  Please, carry on!

Quine and Julian on Blank Generation LP
Laughner and Cheetah on the Rocket from the Tombs 75 demos

Zabranjeno Pusenje's first album Das Ist Walter has really awesome guitar interplay, but it also has keyboards, sax and even sometimes flute snaking in and out of it. Somehow instead of coming off mathematical or angular they manage to pull off songs that are catchy, epic, anthemic, but they still swing and sometimes even funk. Coming from the ethnically diverse, and what was considered culturally backwater Sarejevo (Bosnia) they fused local, indigenous folks elements into their music. They are also notable for their cultural impact/role, but that's not important for this conversation.

(note: This board doesn't recognize characters from various ex-YU alphabets, but the "s" in the band's name has a little u/v type character above it in real life.)
