Mentally Ill is e-fucking-sential.

I've been going through a bunch of WFMU shows from last wek. WHat a bunch of fucking pretentious horsehit. No one has any focus at all excpet for a couple of shows. I know it's free-form, but it seems like these peple wanna just show off how avant guarde and eclectic their tastes are. It's really annoying the shit out of me.

I saw them on that tour. 1995. They were so great. Played their guts out for seven people leaning against a pool table at the Press Club in Sacto.

Holly & the Italians "The Right to Be Italian".  "Rock Against Romance" is so great, I can't stand it.

Kino - 45 (This band is so amazing. I sometimes forget to listen to them for extended periods because they're the classic Soviet "alternative" band. They're probably comparable to Nirvana in America, only they started in the late 70s and early 80's. The singer was in a tragic car accident or something that ended up taking his life which made their dark sound seem kind of prophetic in the way the death of the frontman has for many western rock bands. This album, their first is real bare bones. Acoustic guitars, hand percussion, foot stomping, weird horns in the distance and vocals. It's so sparse and rich at the same time. Anyway, shortly after this they did Natchalic Kamchatka, which would have alot of those minimal synth people going nuts if they heard it. The Pink Reason song New Violence owes a huge stylistic debt to that album. This band is also the reason why Alex from the Feelers learned how to play guitar.)

(edit: I keep on forgetting that Alex once told me that they released a power-pop album too and I keep meaning to check it out. I think it's called Grupa Krovi (Blood Type) or something like that?)

Where does one go about finding this Kino stuff this side of the pond?

Actually if anyone has any recommendations for this sort of stuff (dunno what to call it but it just doesn't seem right to call it pre-punk, it's something on it's own right) i'm all ears.
Twinkeyz
Mirrors
The Styrenes
Michael Yonkers
Easter Monkeys
Screamin' Mee-Mees
The Gizmos
V/A - "Cleveland Confidential"
Index (does this count or is it too early?  Even though it was recorded in '67, I don't think it belongs to any time period.)

Well, you'll have to goto a Russian bookstore then to get it. I don't know how much luck you'll have in SLC. I understand yer aversion to downloading, and I can offer to burn you some CDs and send 'em yer way, but you'll get the stuff a whole lot quicker through slsk.
