we got our stereo all figured out over the weekend so I finally get to hear a bunch of recent acquisitions:

Capt. Beefheart Lick My Decals Off, Baby -  The only other Beefheart LP I own is Safe as Milk, which I love but knew was "less wierd" than this one. After reading a million lazy reviewer references to this album, the only comparison that really seems to fit is AluminumKnotEye (of whom I am a huge fan!) at times - Keith V's vocals in particular.

The Harder They Come OST - I've wanted to pick this up for a while and just traded in some old crap for it two weeks ago. Just as good as I remembered it being. Watched the movie again last night. Nice eye candy for the ladies in the form of a young Jimmy Cliff.

Pandoras - Stop Pretending

Bush Tetras - Boom In The Night (studio recordings '80-'83)

Flying Burrito Brothers - Last of the Red Hot Burritos

Wipers - Is This Real? LP reissue that just came out on Jackpot a few months back (FINALLY)

oh yeah, in case anyone who is dying to get Is This Real? on vinyl and missed the news of the reissue, here is a link:

http://www.jackpotrecords.com/products.php?cat=22&pg=28

I think they only did 1000.

I see they also reissued the Beauregarde LP (17 year-old Greg Sage's first band, apparently "psych/hard rock") - has anyone heard it? What's it like? Is it worth buying?

Skinny Puppy - Last Rites (I know most people on this board just couldn't give a fuck about this band, but this is pretty much the apex of industrial music. It's not that they're the best or the most important, but this is where everything that came before coalesced into something completely new. Industrial music is not known for emotion - apart from maybe Einsturzende Neubauten, who were an anomoly on many levels and were not part of the technologically revolutionary tradition that Industrial encompassed. This is one of the most emotionally raw albums I've ever heard of any genre though. This album is like the sound of a hypersphere unravelling. This is a bad acid trip made flesh. This is what popular music will sound like a hundred years from now on some renegade space station inhabited by smugglers and brilliant dropouts who are applying their vast knowledge to things like nanotechnology used for nefarious purposes. This is cyberpunk. It's fucking amazing! Nothing about it is corny. Alot of shit that looks this far into the future just sounds dated. I dunno, maybe it was the fact that they were on enough dope that one of 'em didn't even survive this album, but somehow they managed to come up with what appears to be easily one of the best and most important albums electronic or otherwise, ever.)

Nutrajet-s/t EP....2 piece band from Orlando, girl drummer...late 90s/early 00s....kinda like Nirvana with a really big Cheap Trick/Pistols influence....I like this for some strange reason even though it has an alt-rock slant to it...I'm sure Niggie Rich will have a story about how lame they are.  I do like this ep though, they did a full album which was sucky alt-rawk.
Never was a fan of this band.  I thought their songs were to long as were their sets, but I dont really have much bad stuff to say about this band.  Greg the singer guitarist is a really awesome guy and a great graphic artist.  Hes made a real good living out of it.  LAst time I saw hiw he was driving a brand new mustang and had just done a poster for some Sevendust show.  He goes by Stainboy.  His stuff is listed on gigposter.

This Black Humor LP is wacked.

Listening to the first 2 PiL LPs a lot lately. Wanna cover "Annalisa" but Battleship already did.

Stooges - "I Got a Right"/"Gimme Some Skin"

Abe Vigoda mp3s. Really gotta get some records by these dudes. No Wave Polvo?

Rocky Horror pic disc soundtrack. That's right queers!

Can anybody explain to me why I should like Times New Viking? I just don't get it at all.

I had friends in college who listened to stuff like Skinny Puppy, but I wasn't into that kinda thing at all back then (with a few exceptions). Kevin, bring some shit over some day.

The new Break the Rules comp (I think it's new) is way too heavy on power pop faggotry - #8 was an awesome balance, one of my favorites of the genre. This one...eh. The best songs are the three Trend tunes from the easily available LP (good job on choosing which tunes to include, though). Steve would probably drop a load.

Der TPK & Sic Alps stuff kicks ass!

To be honest, I'm kinda mystified why so many punkeroos love Times New Viking. I mean, it makes me happy, but it's kind of weird.

To me, they are straight-up modeled after vintage early 90s "indie rock," from stuff like early Slay Tracks Pavement and good fried Sebadoh and things of that ilk (K and KRS type shit) to more noisy shit like old Sitlbreeze yarns (obviously) and something like Shrimper cassettes and 'Popwatch'-y shit like that. Throw out all the UK post-punk/DIY comparisons you want, but you people are listening to what indide rock was at its finest. Maybe it's time to reinvestigate?

Now, on a musical level, it's all about: shaky opff-key/kiler boy-girl harmonies; really sweet melodic riffs that twist and bend and break and sound awesome/fucked-up fidelity-wise; hissy production that actually compliments the music instead of obscuring it;

Also, don't underestimate things like coolness/fashion/graphics/etc. That they are able to stradlle fences of genres (indie/punk/noise/homerecording) is interesting and healthy.

They are stoner-friendly.

Todd, practice ain't happening today. I'm about to get a couple of sparks and I'll burn you that new Der TPK so you can hear it (I got vinyl on the way - but this'll do for now) as it's way better than that CDr I brought over before I think. I'll also bring over some Skinny Puppy. Sometimes your taste suprises me and you might actually like it. Some people on this board contacted me about a year or so ago to let me know they checked out that album based on some rant I made about it and their minds were totally blown.

That's about as good as any comparison I've heard for Abe Vigoda's sound, but I kinda doubt those dudes have listened to Polvo. The no wave I can vouch for...they have been studious about that. But I think Beefheart's another thing they are into, and all of their Smell/il Corral-young-L.A. contemporaries, too.

There's the full-length "Kid City" CD, a split 7" with Child Pornography, a 7" on Silencio, and old copies of the 12" from Not Not Fun. Also some comp tracks plus tour-edition CDRs which are all dried up. Their best-sounding stuff is on "Kid City" and the split with Child P, but especially "Kid City."

If you like them a lot, also try Talbot Tagora....young Seattle kids splitting the difference between Abe Vigoda and the Intelligence (that's how I hear it anyway).

Cool man, almost outta weeeed, though. Gotta call around.

I mean, I get the TNV comparisons (thanks for going through that explanation) and all, but I don't really hear any good tunes. It's not bad, it just sounds like an uninspired blob. Lots of people dig 'em, I dunno, I'll try again some time. They're into what they're doing on stage, good energy and all that, I just don't hear anything exciting in the songs.

I'm surprised you don't like them Todd, as I thought you said you liked Psychedelic Horseshit. They don't sound exactly the same, but I hear a lot of similarities between the two. And I think they have a lot of songs with huge, monster hooks. "Devo and Wine" from the new one is an amazing song.

Erick - I'm still waiting on my list of "killer early indie rock". I got the early Pavement stuff covered, but what else should I be checking out? And where did you find a copy of that Black Humor LP?
