I'd like to think this is just an elaborate April Fool's Joke, but fer crissakes, the fact that print MRR made it to 2019 is a testament to those who do the work. They've stuck to Tim Yo's vision of the zine for eons. Big ups to all the staff and shitworkers and contributors for bustin' ass on a volunteer basis all these decades. Whilst assorted schwanzbags have whined and bellyached about it incessantly for years, it still persists... the very fact that dilbags STILL catch feelings about MRR rules.

Besides the upc code, and issue from 2019 looks not too much different than one from 2009, 1999, or 1989. That said, almost everybody is on their smartphones nowadays- even the punx who don't have $5 to spare for a show or a zine or a whateva.

I read it from #1 onward until the late '80s when I found it better to read the Nation or Z Magazine for my dose of progressive politics, and Forced Exposure or My FLesh or whatever were covering bands I was really interested in as opposed to the generic HC of the day...I have to say in the last 5-10 years, and probably more, they started covering bands that I find myself interested in, so I would try to pick it up wherever.
The record collection will be fine - no one wants a bunch of records covered in green duct tape...

Although the combination of early Mac computers and Martin Sprouse tightened up their originally sloppy look...

it was the only way to find out about any current "real" punk back in the early 90s if you were from nowheresville, unless you were already hip to cool stuff.  i remember there was mrr and flipside and that was pretty much it, and flipside seemed more commercial.  i used to love to order 7"s and tape demos from random ads just based on band names, song titles, art, or from record reviews.

funny story, i dont know if i ever mentioned it, but i was actually on the cover back in '96 with the zeros.  one of tim yo's last issues.  cool dude, obviously knew brilliance when he saw/heard it.

MRR RIP

Yeah for all the political baggage, Tim was definitely a fan of the music...viz. his Die Kreuzen review, The Left review...and even the fine selection mentioned in the post above...

I didn't know it was still in print.  I'm a bit shocked actually.  I haven't seen it since the 80's.
You're on Termbo, but you haven't seen an MRR in 30 years? How not?
Hate disingenuous bullshit like this. Man, you're so punk claiming not to know that MRR still existed. It sure has/had it's faults but it's been such an important piece of punk culture, without a doubt.

My first serious girlfriend was from the MRR classifieds.

I also just really bummed out my co-teacher in 9th Grade Geography who grew up in South Dakota and MRR was his only source of info in the 80's. He was still talking about how important the scene reports were to him as a kid well after the bell rang for the next class. Ironically, this was after we did a lesson on gentrification. RESPECT.

Ap Human Geography? Co-teachers? Are you a Special Education teacher? Where? South Dakota? Has he heard Dissent?

What kind of school has two teachers who know MRR? Bring in some Tianamen 89 discos and have the kids map the diffusion of old-timey punk rock.

Flipside WAS more commercial - they'd have articles, record reviews, and advertisements of major label bands, where MRR wouldn't touch that shit with a barge pole.  I've been thumbing through some old zines, and was reminded of the differences between the two heavy hitters.  In fact, I have a vague remembrance of there being some MRR shit-talk aimed at Flipside for this very reason.

I dunno, it doesn't seem like they're going anywhere. Just not printing a magazine, that by the looks of it, most of you don't read/cant find anyway!

We're nearly two decades into the 21st century, it only makes sense they would alter their focus and format.

An 18 year old in 1977 is turning 60 this year. Podcasts have been around for 15. You're reading this on a website that started as a blog-format punk zine and has never been distributed in a physical format.

Nothing to fear here
