Punk 8 Tracks?
« on: September 11, 2019, 07:06:01 AM »
I bought an 8 track player from Goodwill in 9th grade, and found some cheesy-but-good stuff that I used to listen to: Blondie, The Cars, etc. Think I later threw it out. Just curious: does anybody collect the nitty-gritty obscurities in this field? Saints, Pistols, etc? If so, do you actually listen to them? Or just set them away?

I apologize if this has been covered before.

Check out Aaron Dilloway's IG account devoted to his 8-track collection. Some really cool stuff on there.

I collect them, but not in that I pay money for them. I always check 8-tracks when I see them at flea markets, etc. I've turned up a few good ones, most notably the first Dead Boys album and the first MC5 album.

I don't listen to them though...I don't have an 8-track player.

i have alot of glam 8 tracks still, bowie, trex, etc.  some cool blues, i have a lightning hopkins.  classic rock of course, i have zeppelin, floyd.  badfinger, beatles, cheap trick, so on.

i cant imagine actually playing them, though.  havent had a working 8 track player in maybe a dozen years.

Crazy: I didn't realize how many cult releases made it to 8-track.

I wish working players turned up more. I've got one at my desk at work to be able to check them for quality and to price them, and when the carts are in good shape, they usually sound really good - just as good, if not better then a cassette. I just hate how one track will end part way through a song.

When I was a kid, my buddy Geris used to collect and repair players. One of the earlier "punk" releases I had was "Life On The Line" by Eddie and the Hot Rods on 8-track, which I used to listen to, since I always had a player.

One of my friends, who was/is part of the original Portland punk scene when it first started, talk about 8 tracks all the time. We're the motherfuckers who plan to burn the city down one day :)

Vancouver Washington Punks / 360 (east side OUTCASTS.)
Portland Fucking City Punks / 503

LIFE IS DEATH TO ME.

We're the ones w/ the death wish  :)

I think the antiseen one that tpos put out is the only one I have.

I have a bunch of sealed old country ones, the Drop Dead one, the first NRBQ and the first Apache Dropout LP.  I doubt that I will ever listen to them.

My grandfather used to jam Frank Sinatra and other crooners on the player in his honking metallic blue Lincoln Continental.  Wish he'd willed me that beast.

That mid-track gap is a fucking deal breaker.  Worst format ever?  At least they are nice as objects.

Just sold a box of my old ones to my pal’s record store. I had NY Dolls, Nick Lowe, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Tuff Darts, KISS, Beatles, Elvis Costello, Mountain about 20 others. If anyone wants them they are at Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, NJ!

The Spits had that 8-track a while back. I used to jam it in my 74 G20 Van.
Otherwise, the 8-track players was dominated by the 4 Grand Fun railroad albums that came with the van.
