The Dead Hookers outta Wausau, WI have been festering in the sticks of Marathon County eagerly waiting to unleash the beast.  Well, here it is, their debut LP-CD. The Burial, The Rebirth. This brazen 5 piece can loosely be classified as a garage band.  Their songs are centered around traditional 60’s garage riffs. But instead of restructuring and rehashing the same ‘ol Back From The Grave tunes, the DEAD HOOKERS bring something completely refreshing to the table. They adjoin their fuzzy, decayed Nuggets-like tunes with  trippy, blissful Gris Gris-ey psychadelic interludes. So each song has more of a path, than just the same ‘ol verse-chorus-verse structure.  And the result is something very uniquely their own. Much like bands like the Catholic Boys, Black Lips and the Functional Blackouts-  the DEAD HOOKERS possess a sense of “sound”.  Meaning when you hear one of their songs, you know right away that it’s a DEAD HOOKERS tune.  It’s a sound that’s kind of hard to categorize because you can’t really pigeonhole true art.  Well after listening to  each composition on ‘The Burial-The Rebirth’  you’ll be left with an understanding of their catchy, tweater gnashing, dimentia.

From the title alone, you can tell that the DEAD HOOKERS put alot of time into the conceptualization of ‘The Burial/The Rebirth’.  As you may or may not have noted, the album title  is comprised of the FIRST and LAST songs on the record.  Each song tells a tale, and the album cover perfectly sets the mood for this infectous, meandering masterpiece.  ‘The Burial’ begins fast and hard!  Sounds like a tweaked, heavy Lyres tune that advertantly drifts into phase two.  In this part of the song, all the other instruments drop out to the quiet somber tones of an electric guitar pluckin, what sounds like, the background music for a peaceful, mournful, funeral procession.  Gradually the drums creep back up to the level of the serene git strummin’ before the rest of the band crashes back in to complete the fuzzed out, fucked up riff begun in phase one!  Ummm, alot happening in 3:27!  If you’re thinkin...huh??  Well, I completely understand!   That’s the first song on ‘The Burial/The Rebirth’ and each song on the album has odd little nuances like this essentially making descriptions more confusing, than informative.   So if you like any of the other ‘fringe’ Dead Beat artists like the DC Snipers, AluminumKnotEye or the Feelers, I’d strongly reccomend checkin’ this one out.  It’s far from a standard garage punk record and pretty impressive for how far they stretch the rigidly defined garage rock parameters.  Oh, and they really utilize their 2nd guitar player well.   In certain songs, that 2nd guitar literally pops of nowhere and adds these really catchy, eclectic licks that give those particular tracks even more depth and dynamic.  Vinyl lovers, the LP gets ya an unreleased exclusive bonus track called ‘I Gotta Fever’.  Great tune.

Cover art hand drawn by Mike Sniper .  Mike went from the bands idea to have the “front cover” span the front AND back side of the LP/CD.  So conceptually, there wouldn’t be a “back cover”.  The idea was to have the front of the record be “The Burial” side and the back be “The Rebirth” side.  So they’d come together to create ‘The Burial/The Rebirth’.  Both images were concieved by the band and drawn according to Mike Sniper’s vision of their concept.   Nice job Sniper.  Looks awesome!!

Although my opinion is generally pretty useless, I can say that there are several songs on this album that are great, great, great! I've heard most of their songs and this is a mix of stuff from a few different recording sessions! It looks like they picked the best songs! It should be another Wisconsin worthy release.

Don't get me started again on fucking Taxi. What did Eric say? Def Lepard trying to KBD it up?

But if Tom's gonna put out Dead Hookers & Jazz Music & Feelers & whatever LPs, I think that's great. LPs are rough to finace in comparison to 7"s, which is one of the reasons I believe singles are taking over the marketplace again in terms of quality.

Pink Reason & Catholic Boys are sitting in the kitchen ready to go, and have been for quite a while, but Pussmaster decided he didn't want to finish the LSOK LP artwork, so I enlisted Val, who's been too busy to do it for the last few weeks. I may just send in the singles and say "fuck" the LP for now - I was just thinking about this over lunch. I'm gonna ask her what she thinks, and if it's gonna be a while, I'll send in the singles within the week.

Fuck the artwork, just put the fucking record out.

Maybe that'll create a new trend, coverless record.  SLEEVES ONLY with sharpie art!

I'll do it for $500, Todd.

Hey cocklick, I put all the artwork together disposing of a lot of my freetime for the CD art already including the sleeve insert. Then you decided to do vinyl. Don't act like I didn't do anything for you.
