Memoir of a Russian Punk - Eduard Limonov (Pretty simple writing, but this shit is so real it could practically be my own memoir of life in Siberia. This is a record of the lives of Russian youths, and apparantly nothing has changed since Kruschev. Brilliant and fucking brutal! Read this and understand!)

Are there any true crime books anyone can recommend? Ive read "You Can't Win" and "Bad Girls Do It" and liked them.

Panzram by Gaddis is probably on everyone who has read it's list.

also
Ed Saunders - The Family
Louise Thoresen - It Gave Everybody Something to Do
Nick Tosches - Power on Earth
Tracy Kidder - Road to Yuba City
Tom Tullett - Portrait of a Bad Man (more of a bio of a criminal than true crime)
Rene Louis Maurice & Ken Follett - The Gentlemen of 16 July  (aka Robbery Under the Streets of Nice)
Jack Altman - Born to Raise Hell

on that note... is there anything along the lines of "you can't win" that i should read?  just really good non-fiction (doesn't necessarily have to be auto-bio, or even about crime) but journalistic i should say.  like jack black or burroughs (i'm thinking junky, not naked lunch)?

I'd check out Memoir of a Russian Punk. It's not the same as You Can't Win, but you'd probably like it alot if you liked that one and it's also non-fiction. I finally found a copy online recently for about six bucks and had it in two days.

You Can't Win is one of the greatest books ever written, hands down. Read that book countless times. "You Can't Win" is actually the name of the next Pink Reason record too.

i've heard you mention this before and assumed it was some punk-recollection thingie... but this sounds amazing.  just ordered it on amazon used for 8 bucks.  can't wait to read it

so, i guess what i was saying above was slightly wrong... i guess really great autobiographical novels.  nothing super thick, just great writing and great stories

Mike - You've read Last Exit to Brooklyn? If not, top o' your list. Also Journey to the End of the Night by Celine is a good downer.

If you want a sad book about a defeated man check out George Grosz's autobiography.

Also one of the rawest bios ever is Straight Life by sax genius Art Pepper.

And on a different note: Track down John L Sullivan's autobiography, I Can Lick Any Sonofbitch in the House. VERY entertaining read.

Don't know how this fits, but for some reason your post reminded me of Frederick Exley's 'A Fans Notes'. Basically an loose autobio concerning mental instability, failure, alcoholism and super sports fandom (in this case a Giants fan) in the 1950s. Pretty great.

follow ups to A FAN'S NOTES are great, too, as Exley has nothing to write about except how he has nothing to write about. Brilliant! Well, not really, but funny as hell. Plus, 3rd has him headed to Hawaii for no apparent reason other than his life has gone to shit. Yes.

Reading Julian Cope JapRockSampler out of order, Please Kill Me (again) in the bathroom, and The Black Swan, which is funny 'cause the author is such a dick. Reminds me of Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance in arrogant philosophical assholeness that's still readable for some reason.

Used a gift certificate to buy impulse shit, ended up with:

"Village Green", one of those 33rpm books about albums, this one the Kinks', great so far
"Low Life" by Luc Sante
"Masters of Death" Richard Rhodes, about the pre-death camp SS tactics in the East.
"Complete Short Stories" Mark Twain. Duh.

Clerk tells me I'm eclectic, I can see a thread up there.
