Here's a thread I started last year re: Montreal.  Lots of good stuff in there.

Had a lot of fun there. Did lots of walking, especially on St. Denis, which is where most of the record stores are.

Poutine!!!!

You'll love Montreal, Dulce. It's one of my favorite cities anywhere.

That's what I hear. Everyone I mention it to says it's an awesome city and I've never been. That deli looks like the tops!

Schwartz is awesome.

Only thing I can add that I didn't mention last year is, if you're here during warm weather, consider renting a bike.  Montreal is a great city for bicycles.  I bike to work almost every day now that its warm out, as there are a lot of trails and areas that are designated only for biking.

And as far as restaurants go, if you're in the mood some for something a little more upscale, check out Chu-Chai on St-Denis street, a Thai restaurant that specializes in fake meat dishes.  Your mind will be blown regardless of whether or not you are a vegetarian.  The fake beef tastes so good, its really hard to believe its not real.

Depending on how things go, I might be moving up to Montreal this fall, looking for cheap housing, any areas of town I need to avoid?

Depends on how much you're willing to pay.  Generally, I'd say avoid N.D.G., Cote-Saint-Luc, Verdun, Ville-Emard, Ville-Saint-Laurent, Lachine, anything north of rue Jean-Talon, east of rue DeLormier or west of Decarie boulevard because its just too damn far away from the downtown area.  Outremont and Westmont are beautiful (token rich person areas), and some deals can be found there from time to time on the outskirts of the neighborhoods, but its generally out of sight price wise.  As far as livable locations go, Pointe-Sainte-Charles, St-Henri and Little Burgundy are definitely the cheapest places to live.. small two bedroom type dealies usually range from $500-$700 a month around here and around $400 for one bedrooms.  Rosemont and Parc-Extension are also worth looking into, its just outside of the Mile-End/Plateau area so its walking distance from where a lot of shows take place, price range is about the same.  If you want to live in the prime hip, nightlife area in the Plateau or Mile-End, One bedrooms start around $700 and two bedrooms are upwards of $1000.  Downtown Montreal (around Concordia and McGill University, or in Old Montreal) is slightly more expensive, around $1200 and up for 2 bedroom dealies.  If you check Montreal craigslist or Kijiji.com you'll find a lot of listings.

I was just up there over the weekend.  Montreal rules, indeed.  We went to Le Bifteck on St. Laurent Friday night.  It's an english speaking dive bar.  I had a great time there a few years ago (met the Cro-Mags and got wasted with them) but this time just wasn't as fun.  The music kind of sucked and there were way more yuppies then last time.  Worth a shot though if you'd in that neighborhood, maybe it was an off night.  It's down the block from Schwartz's.

Saturday night we went to L'Esco bar on St. Denis. That was way cooler.  The dj played punk, garage, and weird go-go stuff.  The rest of my time was spent in a strip club.  Voila.

P.S.  you can buy codeine cough syrup at the pharmacy!

Yeah, Biftek is so bad, its like all myspace pseudo-hipsters there now.  Most of St-Laurent actually kind of sucks pretty badly now, if its not the drunken tourists (no offense) fucking with your fun at one place, the hipsters have completely taken over almost everywhere else.  Barfly still rules, though, and nice to see L'Escogriffe get some much deserved props.
