the assumptions about women & music that get thrown around this board are so idiotic. i know they are based on guys' personal observations and frustration with their town's shrinking mating pool but the conclussions are so skewed by geography, demographics, style of music, etc. that it is stupid to make any generalizations about such things. And god forbid a woman chime in to counter what you have already decided is so: they are told their opinion doesnt count, that they dont know what they are talking about, that they are a freak. I'd say no wonder why women stay away from the music scene, if not for the fact that since I've been going to shows (the late 70s), the mix of women and men at most rock shows have been pretty much equal. Yes, I'd see more men at Slayer shows. But I'd see more women at a Modest Mouse show. On a standard rock & roll show in Sacramento or SF, the mix is 50/50 and it has been that since I can remember. I see more men in bands, that is true but that is different than attending shows. And so a woman does not collect at the same rate as her male counterpart, but is that really the gauge of how much she is into music? So she doesnt go to every show? Is that really a measure? No, there are far too many things to consider other than hording behavior and social activity. This "oh where are thou chicks!" train of thought isnt annoying because it is sexist or biggoted or anything, but because it is so fucking shallow and moronic and the conclusion - chicks just aint into music like guys are - is unfathomably stupid.
