Jay Reatard didn't go from Matador to TRL though. He's been releasing home recorded shit that he did all by himself since he was what, fifteen years old? He's been doing this shit for like ten years now or a litttle more.
Shit like Arcade Fire debuting at 1? What's surprising about that? It sounds like commercial music to me. Did they start out on an indie label? Just because you're on an independent label doesn't mean that you have anything to do with the underground. Andrew WK is definitely an interesting anomaly. He's got more background in the noise scene than anything else as far as I can see. Bjork? Chick was in KUKL. She was on Crass records. I'd be more shocked if she wasn't mining the underground for talent. She's been doing that for years.
Anyway, I'm kinda surprised by the attention Jay's gotten and kind of not. I mean, he deserves the attention. He's a mean kid from the wrong side of the tracks writing brilliant pop songs. That shit is rock 'n roll. He's violent, yet his songs are sexy. That's pretty marketable.
I've been telling people for years and years that people will listen to what you tell them too, and I've been proven completely right too. I think it's kind of cool that right now people are telling people to listen to good bands. It's cool seeing nice things happen for my friends. On other side of that same token, it's nice to do nice things for friends too, like tell people to check out their music, because, the shit is good. I know what good music is, so I'm not afraid to tell people what to check out. It's been pretty beneficial for all parties too. The bands get attention, people get good music, and I get to feel good knowing that I played my part in getting the word out. I was pretty bummed out when I'd be trying to get help from friends that I thought were pretty successful and I'd hear "I like your stuff, but I don't think anyone else will." Like I said, I've always felt people will listen to what you tell them too. So I just thought they were cowards. I was right. So, that's cool.
