I assume that some promo group associated with a number of labels pitched the concept to RJReynolds. The bands in the add are not unfamiliar to the average college DJ, even Home Blitz which, thanks to the 17 emails a week a receive from Gulcher every time Daniel whips it out, are common knowledge among indie central/

Definitely not. I emailed these pictures to some friends in one of the bands named and their label says no one ever consulted them on this at all. One of the dudes said that the people at Kill Rock Stars have already bitched out the RS editorial staff about this (to make matters even more sketchy, apparently RS staff picked the bands included in this for Camel, not the labels or any PR company) and have a lawyer looking into it.

Funny, this website was still up and running yesterday (I tried to register for it -- you needed a US Drivers License and Social Security number.... creepy) when I emailed them about it... Email was forwarded to their label reps at the same time. Yet, that story is dated from a week ago. Weird.

Haha. Bob from Gulcher is about the worst punk label spammer out there. Frank at Smog Veil would be #2. Neither of them are on the KBD list anymore, to the relief of our 600+ subscribers.

it will be interesting to see how this pans out. There is a good chance that some promo company was involved, one that reps for labels like Parts Unknown, Load, Subpop, etc. If so RJR can hide behind that. If not, perhaps RJR will try to claim that it wasnt a cigarette ad but a music promo thing. Maybe Ben from Load can chime in and tell what he knows as his label's bands are all over that ad.

Doesn't this violate some federal law about marketing to minors???
Wasn't that the same reason why the Joe Camel campaign was abandoned???

Only 600+ people subscribe? Not trying to rub it in your face. I am just surprised is all. I would think it would be way more.

From the New York Times regarding this campaign:
An insert in Rolling Stone magazine sponsored by Camel cigarettes is under fire from antismoking activists because, they say, it blurs the line between advertising and editorial content ? and worse yet, features cartoons.
The insert was among several in the Nov. 15 issue, celebrating the magazine?s 40th anniversary. All the inserts were what the industry calls butterfly gates ? ad pages on the outside, which unfold to reveal pages of articles inside.
In this instance, the Camel ads promoted a campaign and Web site devoted to ?free range music? (thefarmrocks.com), which supports independent record labels. The article inside, ?Indie Rock Universe,? presented lists of independent bands and fanciful illustrations of planets, animals and spaceships by Benjamin Marra.
?This is one great big cigarette ad,? said Matthew L. Myers, president of the organization, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, in Washington.

600's none too shabby--especially when you consider that it's the same 15 folks yakkin' week after week. thankfully, some of the earlier, more vocal participants have taken a backseat.

669 at last count. I actually think that's pretty high, especially considering there is zero promotion other than a link on my site. How big is the worldwide base of people who care enough about the genre that they'd want to be an an email list about it? 1000-2000?

Fuck the anti smoking people. The ad features cartoons? How about the ad features drawings and bright colors? How about teaching your kids not to smoke? Yeah, sure I know the tobacco companies market to children, so do the sugar/snack/cereal companies and I see a hell of a lot more fat fucking kids than I do kids dragging around an O2 tank. So why not tax sugar? Yes, please do tax sugar because I dont want my tax money to go buy rascals for the children of america.
And about the cartoons. fuck that. i dont recall the nation's youth trying to shave with a rodent after weasels rip my flesh came out.
