So, lately I've watched two movies: Strange Brew and La Dolce Vida. The latter took me more than one sitting to get through, but after finishing it I can safely say that Fellini is tres overrated. Did the movie look beautiful? Yes. Were the characters intriguing? Yes. Was the soundtrack great? Yes. Was there a plot? No fucking way, unless you want to count Marchello (sp?) wandering from party to party and generally being a dick to everyone. The stuff with Steiner was interesting, but it's too bad that it ultimately leads up to nothing but MORE PARTYING. I can see the argument that this movie is more about the main characters emotional and moral state, and how the liner progression of a usual plot is replaced by the story of his regression as a human being. Okay, I get that. Fellini could have made that point in a regular two hour movie and cut out a few of the party/debauchery scenes. But no, instead he just inundates the viewer with endless scenes that ultimately go nowhere featuring characters that never get fleshed out enough for me to actually care what happens to them. He obviously was a very talented director, but based on this movie he had no sense of how to tell an actual story. This movie is just a collection of pretty shots that ultimately leads nowhere. AND IT TAKES OVER THREE FUCKING HOURS TO GO THERE. In the immortal words of Men on Film, HATED IT.
Strange Brew was of course great. Even funnier than I remembered it being.
