I'm reading "Inner City Sound - Punk and Post-Punk in Australia 76 - 85" and there's a pic of the 'Australian Swell Maps' - The Swell Guys. It says they did a single. Anyone heard it? I'm intrigued

This record is a bit uneven - one good post-punk-ish track, another pretty good sub-two minute song, and a longer track that's a snoozer. It's on the same label as the second Riptides 7".

When I interviewed old mate from Inner City Sounds, I asked him about a few of the more obscure 7s like these guys, etc., and he came up blank. Shit, he hadn't heard of the Upsets, which bummed me out because I was pushing for some information about this incredible underrated and overlooked Ipswich punk band.

Luke, give it up. No more Swell Guys. Tell us about the UPSETS.

the swell guys' "sidetracking" made the second volume of CAN'T STOP IT.  they've a picture on page two of the booklet, too...

nice series, but seems doubtful we'll get a third volume.  oh well

I can give you the drummer's email address if you want. Be warned that band members were tapped for copies of the record long ago, and from all accounts, people who have dealt with them have found it pretty tough going.

dan, i believe henry weld has the dirt on the upsets.

Not too much dirt - found the singer in the 90s, too much junky business.

Spent an entertaining evening in a caravan park in Byron Bay with the singer's skinhead brother and the man of the minute - Rob Noxious, not long after:

the story according to him was, Brisbane band, put out the 7", Midnight Oil's management liked it and offered them a management contract, moved to Sydney, managers got a whiff of white powder usage and dropped them like a stone, end of band not long after.

I had one more track recorded after the 7", taped off Brisbane radio in the early 80s, gtr sound is a bit more metally but it's alright. Sven has that tape as he was working on a reissue at some stage. Now he has some stories...

The drummer is on myspace too...
